(Ad) One or two yard sales unposted - missing Street and Number

But over 50 are posted now

It looks like there will be a record number of Yard Sales today - over 50 on CM - and there would maybe be one or two more if they had arrived with either $9 or with Street & Number for Venue (or some way to contact the Yard Sale Host - an email or phone number).

It frets us something awful when these things happen, but, in the words on our epitaph: He done the best he could.

If your yard sale is not posted yet, send it again, with Street & Number to make it Free, or send $9.00 to pay for the ad. And to speed it up, Send the Complete Yard Sale in One Email, with as good a spelling and punctuation - all the commas and stuff - as you know how to do. -EW

JIM: A bridge or a cupola? Burning issue in earlier days

By "Jim"

This appeared in the March 28, 1922 News in a column titled "Do you remember?"

[Do you remember] the race in this county for the Legislature, Mr. John A. Stewart and Mr. Chapman Dohoney being the candidates? The issue between them was, Stewart wanted a bridge built across Russell's Creek where the first bridge now spans the stream, near the roller mill. Dohoney wanted to build a cupola on the court-house, the first temple of justice erected in the county.

Stewart promised that should he be elected he would use his influence to have County Court build the bridge, and Dohoney made the same promise to have the cupola erected on the court-house. The Saturday before the election the candidates met in debate in the court auditorium. Mr. Stewart was a very intelligent man, not often turned down in an argument. In closing his speech, he said:

"Gentlemen, if you elect my opponent over me, all you will have to do to reach Columbia will be to wade Russell's Creek, come up to the square and take a look at the cupola."

This brought down the house. Compiled by "Jim"
