Should set an example for children

Troy Grider writes:
It may or may not harm or help our local tax base, but for goodness sake what will it do to our children? What kind of example would we set for them by allowing liquor sales? If one wants to drink and contaminate him/herself, that's each ones' choice. But let's not condone such as we are to set the example for our young ones coming on whatever it may cost us! I think it's about time that our morals in this community come to the surface once again, not the darkness that so desperately seeks exposure. Come on, take a stand for what is right! - Troy Grider

Wonders how many Adair Countians make regular booze runs?

Lois Cunningham writes:
How many Adair County residents either stop on their way home or get in their cars and drive to "Sims" or Bowling Green, or other wet counties around us and make a booze run? If you go in the majority of homes here you will find some kind of liquor readily available. Those of you that do not drink, fine, but those of us that do should not have to pay taxes to other cities, and counties to do so. Adair County could certainly use those tax dollars. so for more than one reason i say go wet. --Lois Cunningham

No Yorkie at Green River Animal Shelter

This letter received after an earlier post that a found animal had been taken to the local animal shelter. We're checking to see if the writer may have had another shelter in mind. We apologize so deeply to the local shelter for any inconvenience this may have caused. We meant well. -EW

Sandy Ford writes:
There is a mistake. There has been no Yorkie brought to the shelter. Whoever has posted this needs to update it and change information. Thank you - Sandy Ford
And so we have. The ad has been deleted. We'll recheck. Could be our mistake. In any case, the real need is to see that the little dog is adopted, not euthanized. Isn't that all we all want to do? -EW

Winston was privileged to find his special family

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
Neighbor Betsy's beautifully crafted essay has to remind fellow animal lovers of the life and times - and the passings - of very cherished pets. With a long history of being 'found' by dozens of cats, a few dogs, and several horses, Jim and I know that some have, from the start, displayed exceptional characters and quirky traits which make them great companions, sorely missed when they are gone.

For many weeks after the death of a favorite, we can almost convince ourselves for a moment that they are still there -if we turn quickly, surely that fur-clad form will be rushing to greet us.

Winston was privileged to find his special family, and they were blessed to share his long-in-dog-years life. - Sharon Whitehurst

The selling of alcohol won't help our economy nor hurt it. It won't increase our tax base nor hurt it. The one reason to make it available is to control its sale better. Legal sales are controlled much better than illegal -RALPH WAGGENER

Likes Columbia just the way it is when it comes to alcohol

Ashley Curry writes:
If someone dies of thirst waiting on wine, then so be it. There are many non-alcoholic drinks to keep myself and others quenched. If you want to live in a wet county please do so and move. I'm sure they would be happy to have you! Sorry, but I like Columbia just the way it is when it comes to this issue and I've survived here for 30 years. Drinking is definitely your choice and I don't condemn you for that, but I don't want to see alcohol ads slammed all over Columbia. - Ashley Curry
Thanks, Ashley Curry, for your comment. Worry about the suggestion that anybody be asked to move if they want a change, though. That is troubling. I wouldn't like it if the pro-legalized sales folks won and said the same thing to you: You're a keeper. So are they, even if we don't see eye-to-eye on every single issue. -EW

Call me impatient but I could die of thirst waiting for Adair Countians to bring the wet/dry issue to vote.

Wonder what would happen if everyone who wanted to do so would make the legal limit of homemade wine and ceased buying any of the storebought or bootlegger spirits. That might change Adair County's balance of trade in a hurry. (Somebody do the math). -ED
