A Perfect Day to study outside at Lindsey Wilson College

Click on headline for introduction and two photos

Friday, August 26, 2011, was a near-perfect day to study and relax outside on the Lindsey Wilson College A.P. White Campus. Although temperatures reached the 90s, the absence of high humidity made it enjoyable for some students to study outside. Duane Bonifer

Commends CM for learning Totem Pole's whereabouts

Wants to know if Majestic Missing ACHS Totem Pole might be put on Exhibition?
Comments re photo 41512 Majestic missing ACHS Totem Pole discovered

Trish Jackson writes:
Awesome job Agent Waggener!! I'm so glad you solved the totem pole mystery. I never knew about the surplus auction!! Any possible chance that the owners of the totem pole might consider placing it on display somewhere for all to see? Just an idea... --Trish Jackson
Don't thank me, though I appreciate it. Helen Fay McKinley is the one who sent in the Anonymous Tip which broke the case. Yes, the public really should have the right to see the Totem Pole. Nothing fancy, maybe just something like the King Tut exhibit. If the new owners have the Vision and Foresight, and are as committed to Culture and Enlightenment as we are, it could be happen and be a transforming moment for our civilization. -EW

Was Jim's Chicken lasso-ing snake a Hoop one?

And everyone was already worried about 38 day Augusts
Comments re article 46449 JIM Chicken 1 Snake 0Martha Berry writes:
I wonder- Is that the first hoop snake? - Martha Berry
Martha Berry, a question like could have caused a stroke! I never slept well as a little boy after Granny Etna McCaffrey Waggener would tell me, Ralph Roy, and Bobby Chelf about Hoop Snakes, Glass Snakes and other dangerous creatures. Then just yesterday, I got a systems overload after reading about the supermacho She-Male garter snake! Today Bro. Dave Rosenbaum told us about the 38-day Augusts they used to have at Fairplay when he was a boy. How in the world would anybody get through 38-day August, I'll never know. And I'd thought there was a move on to get rid the whole month. Now you bring up hoop snakes. Surely this is the toughest job in the world. -ED

Wants to know where Milltown, KY is?

Comments re photo 41592 Jeff Hatcher announces Trade Day in Milltown KY

Maury Lewis writes:
Where is Milltown Ky. What direction do I head in? What bend in the road is it around? - M.E.Lewis
On Google Maps: Click Here. It's north of Columbia via KY 61, with a left just north of the Russell Creek Bridge on to KY 768. Or, you could go to Hardscratch, and try to follow KY 768 to Milltown. It's the longest Highway in Adair County, and we don't know anyone who's ever gone that way. -EW

Fairplay, KY set World Record for foggy August morns

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
Mr. Fudge's pome reminded me of a tale at my Dad's store at Fairplay. Some in the community believed that foggy mornings in August were a scientific indicator of the severity of the upcoming winter. There would be a tracking snow for every foggy morning in August. Someone announced that there would be thirty-eight tracking snows the following winter because they had meticulously counted the foggy mornings in August and there were thirty-eight of 'em. --Dave Rosenbaum

Wants to know when Mike is opening the Circle R

Comments re article 46434: For Business Location In Walking Distance of Lindsey Wilson

Lois Cunningham writes:
Just wondering if Mike is so high on "within walking distance of Lindsey," which I, by the way, think is great. When is he finally going to do something about re-opening the Circle R? It sits there slowly dying and is not only within walking distance of Lindsey, but directly on the way to Lindsey's football/ baseball complex. There is no place for out of town guests and local residents to have a non fast food / non ethnic meal. A good place to have a steak or fish would be a great bonus for Columbia. - Lois Cunningham
We've told Mike Stephens the same thing, over and over and over - at least about opening the Circle R, though not about the kind of restaurant it would be, but don't seem to have one bit influence directly with him at all. However, we do have much say with his brother, Richard Stephens and Jack Russell Stephens, perhaps The Smartest Dog in Adair County, and will take the matter up with them. That ought to get the ball rolling. We'll see. -EW

Poetry inspired by August's morning fogs - Misted Warren

Misted Warren, Inspired by August's morning fogs
By Billy Joe Fudge
White water towers protrude through
Early morning mist searching for blue
Skies and yellow morning light.

Cool earth left from a night
Of open windows and drawn quilts
Has like webs of spider's silks
Enveloped both man and beast
And blocked the dawning east
Till on up into the day.

Slowly motorists find their way
As inside a misted warren
Edged by dripping fields of corn,
Lawns and vague, ghostly forms
Of homes, stores and shadowy trees.

Then silently in an effort to set free
Those caught up in this foggy snare
Streams of light like strands of hair
Illuminate somewhat the scene.
Man no longer hung between
The nether world and web
As mist has fallen into ebb
Begins a quickened pace.

Now the tense, strained face
Can once again discern
Things of major concern.
Now eyes behold what mind
Could only supply the blind
From memory and from rote;
From instinctual note.
Poetry by Billy Joe Fudge, Vice President, Homeplace on Green River. Retired District Forester, Kentucky Division of Forestry. August 26, 2011

JIM: Chicken 1, Snake 0

By "Jim"

The following article made the front page of the Adair County News on September 6, 1911 - and it wasn't even a slow news week!

A Terrific Battle - Eats 'm Alive

Mr. W.T. McFarland, Mayor of this city, reports a fierce encounter between a chicken, frying size, and snake. On last Saturday he noticed a chicken making a heroic effort to pass through this world, and found that a snake about a foot long had seized the chicken near its head, and was hanging on.

The chicken run until it could not further go, and at this juncture the fowl began pecking the tail end of the snake and soon had it all swallowed except about two inches, and the snake was still clinging to the chicken's feathers near its head.

This condition lasted for a few minutes, the chicken trying to swallow, and the snake trying to get out. Finally the reptile let loose, and was soon in the craw of the chicken. - Jim

IRENE: Adair Countian Gary Fausnaugh with Coast Guard D.A.R.T. Team

Senior Chief Gary Fausnaugh on his way to Springfield, MA

Betsy Fausnaugh writes:
As hurricane Irene bears down on the east coast of the U.S., I just received word that my husband, Senior Chief Gary Fausnaugh, is on his way to Springfield, MA, with his Coast Guard Reserve D.A.R.T. team out of Huntington WV

D.A.R.T. stands for Disaster Assistance Response Team, he specializes in water rescue. From this area his team can be sent anywhere from Maine down to NC. In previous years he has assisted in flooding in ND and KY.

This storm is a monster and I hope and pray that folks heed the warnings being sent out now and get out of her way! But if not the Coast Guard will be there for them. I will keep you advised as this plays out. Betsy Fausnaugh --Betsy Fausnaugh
Thanks. I'm sure the thoughts and prayers of all Adair Countians are with your family. Thanks for keeping us posted. We look forward to hearing how this plays out. -EW
