Click on headline for reunion story and photo(s)

By Morris Shepherd

CHS class of '51 had a very successful and delightful reunion in and around Columbia environs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 5-6-7, 2011. We met at the Best Western Motel, Friday afternoon and motored to Cumberland Lake for dinner, then back to the motel for more stories and fables about those good times at CHS back in the 40s-50s.

Attending were Evalene Shepherd Harris, Sally Harris, Lavelle Farris Shepherd, Wayne Curley, Margaret Moore Austin, Barbara Barnes and Nancy Wilkinson. Kathleen Collin Gregory, husband Charles Gregory, Donald Harris, Morris Shepherd, Nancy Curley, Bonnie Long, Charles Barnes and Jack Wilkinson.

Those going back 'north' met for breakfast before sadly leaving our friends of yore to return to the real world. - Morris Shepherd

Remembers hiding food from bears on way to Mt. LeConte

Ruth Ann writes:
This brings back memories of Michael and me and Dr. Holladay and Claudette when we hiked up to Mt. LeConte. I remember we had to put our food in a hole with an iron cover to keep the bears from getting it. We had a good meal in the little lodge there. If I remember right it was 7 miles up there. We spent the night in a small cabin with bunk beds. Hiking back down the next day wasn't any easier than going up but I am glad we did it. - Ruth Ann

The COF confesses his exact antiquity, pretty much

Cites very serious injustice of etceteration in listing of great Western heroes in Betsy Sharp's letter, particularly omission of Duncan Renaldo, but admits the error simply matter of her youth and immaturity

COF writes:
Mz Sharp's comments re the "great wetern heroes" brought back some long forgotten mis-spent Saturdays but her short list ending "etc" seems like an injustice to the likes of Johnny Mack Brown, Tom Mix, Cowboy Bob Copas and of course the infamous Duncan Renaldo of "The three Mesquiteers" and Cisco Kid fame. But in fairness she says she goes back "many, many years." and I'm afraid ole COF goes back many, many, many years.COF at Dun Roman

For Business Location: In Walking Distance of Lindsey Wilson?

Huge announcements are expected from Holladay Place in the next days or weeks, but Jametown Street and Downtown Columbia, both written off at one time when the bypass opened and the new shopping center was built, are in the middle of boom times. The catalyst: Lindsey Wilson College. The arrival of students has transformed the local economy. Now 'In Walking Distance of Lindsey Wilson' is the ruling benchmark which is driving the frenzied development of Downtown Columbia and Jamestown Hill retailing, now very hot retailing centers. The transformation is remarkable
By Ed Waggener

Predictions of the demise of Jamestown Street with the building of Holladay Place and the Western Bypass have proven highly inaccurate.

The area form the Square to the Parkway, out Russell Road, and the Hurt Street area are in the midst of boom times. Columbia businessman Mike Stephens thinks he knows the key. "Everybody knows that Lindsey Wilson College has provided the spark for the Columbia economy," he said. And, he said, he's willing to let everyone in on a secret, "What new businesses are asking, whether local ones or national chains, is for a 'Yes' to the question, 'Is it in Walking Distance of Lindsey Wilson College?'"
