JIM: The Fleetfooted Tennessee Nag

By "Jim"

This humorous tale of Tennessee chicanery perpetuated in Adair County 172 years ago appeared in the News ninety years ago this month.

An Old Race Recalled

The coming of the fair reminds us of an old story we heard Mr. Kearn Owens relate many years before he died. It was in the year of 1839 when there was a race course in this town to the left and beyond the bridge that spans Russell creek. The big race was billed for a certain day and an old gentleman arrived with a poor gray horse, from Tennessee.

He entered his horse with the understanding that he himself was too old to ride, and that he would not trust a jockey he did not know, but he was willing for his horse to run without a rider. The Judges agreed, and the old man buckled a surcingle around his horse and answered, "Ready." The horses were brought upon the track, the jockeys mounted, and the bell was tapped.

The old gray horse took the lead and come under the string fifty yards ahead.

The old gentleman was made many offers for his horse, but there was nothing doing. It was learned afterwards that the horse was the fastest animal in Tennessee, and that he had never lost a race.

Many are following ACHS golf on CM, Coach writes

A much appreciated note. Thanks from CM, Coach Goodin

Kimberly Goodin writes:
Thanks for all the coverage! I have so many people who stop me and comment about seeing the golf information on Columbia Magazine. I realize that your purpose is not sports coverage but I believe you would be surprised how many people enjoy seeing that information as well. It's not just about golf - people support our student athletes in this community and as a coach/administrator - I really appreciate it.Thanks again for all you do in supporting our students! - Kim Goodin, Coach, Adair County High Girls Golf Team. Our thanks to to you Coach Goodin and to your colleague, Boys Golf Team Coach Steve Burton. Nothing we feature gives more pleasure than to watch those you are mentoring soar. Thanks for understanding that CM's core material and audience would be closer to that of Southern Living than to Sports Illustrated. We're here to cover the highlights of sports. We're leaving the in-depth coverage to the sports sites. What you send us is what we call "CM Gold." It's interesting, it contains the information we want, always with the street and number for the venues, and it focuses on the student athletes. Thanks for helping us create the synergy to better publicize your program. Best wishes for a continued great season. -EW

Reader sends way to help Sugarfoot Rescue - send dog food

Sandi Wills writes:
Dear Ed;I read the online CM every day. I am hoping you can generate some help for Peg Schaeffer (Sugarfoot Farm Rescue).

The economy continues to decline and unemployment takes its toll as well. Still, our friend, Peg, never turns down an abandoned, abused or stray dog. Her heart is in love with dogs.

Peg needs donations to help feed the dogs. She has been doing this on her own since she moved to Kentucky. Lots of Columbia citizens say they support her and her Rescue. They need now to step up and show their support.

Day & Day Feed in Columbia has the dog food she uses. It only costs about $20 for a 50lb bag. They can call D&D and purchase a bag for her with a card and they will hold it for her to pick up.What easier way than this to support a good woman and a good cause! --Sandi Wills
