Thinks roadside tree eating machines are uglifying, too

Comments re photo 41426 Columbia Courthouse from Tim Lee Carter eraGlora Anderson writes:
I got quite a chuckle out the referral to the "Uglification" project. Put me to thinking that some of those fellas offspring must be around running those tree eating machines that make such a sight of the trees along the roadside. And I am sure some of the less intelligent offspring are some of those that create the unsightly litter mess. I won't go on like I probably could here. But thanks for the chuckle. I have a new word to make use of now! - Glora Anderson
The tree chewing machines - and worse spraying - do leave terrible ugliness in their wake, whether used by the road departments or the utility companies or individual land owners. It's ironic that governments spend money on tourism promotion and often a similar amount on herbicides and uglification applying the tourism funds to to keeping the roadsides clean would have done more for tourism than any media hustle, billboard, or logo or acronym could ever do. There must be a better way to trim roadsides. Can someone come forward with a solution. Personally, I never like any roadside more than one mostly left alone, its shape fashioned by passing vehicles. Send any ideas using any Contact/Submit. -Ed Waggener.

Ashe Co., NC, preserved old courthouse in wonderful way

Jefferson, NC. building has information about the northwestern North Carolina county from its birth to the present day.
Comments re article 46215 Would hate to see Columbia's landmark courthouse lost

Celia Stuart writes:
In Ashe County, NC, the people turned the old courthouse into an historical place where people could go and see and also read about the county from its birth to present day. They did this by having money making events and applying for grants, which I guess was a lot easier a few years ago,. They have turned the place into something that is well loved and people find much information there that otherwise they might miss. -Celia Stuart
It's going to be a tough job, but there is definitely the will to make it happen. There's nothing Columbia/Adair County can't do when the leadership is as united as it is right now, with both Mayor Mark D. Harris and the CJE Ann Melton committed to the project. All the local media will be publicizing the effort starting this week. We'll try to do our part, as well. -EW

The McKinney, KY B-58 Plane Crash, Dec.12, 1966

Part I: Author learns and begins investigation of story of crash from Alan Reed, an eye witness to the aftermath on that December evening, when one of the world's first supersonic bombers crashed, at the height of the Cold War, interrupting area residents while they watched an episode of The Big Valley.

On a Saturday morning in the spring of 2011, Alan Reed and I were having breakfast together. This is something we do often, but this morning was special. Alan told me about an experience he had when he was 13 years old. It seems that when "Mr. Radio" was a youth growing up in Casey County, he was infatuated with electronic gizmos and the process of radio. He started hanging out at the local radio station so much they put him to work as a Sunday button pusher.

Ansel Adams (1902-1984), the famed photographer who is probably best known for his awe-filled images of Yosemite Valley, had some choice words to share about good photographs. He said, "You don't take a photograph, you make it." Would hate to see Columbia's landmark courthouse lost

A followup comment to RIchard Raines: It would be sad to see Columbia, KY's Historic Courthouse fall into disrepair

Richard Raines writes:
I'm 50 and I remember the shape the courthouse had "slipped" into before the renovation in the mid 1970's. I for one was proud to see it renovated then and know anyone who remembers the "before renovation" state it was in would hate to see it slip to that (or be destroyed because we "couldn't afford upkeep for it") - Richard Raines
Your thinking seems to be the same as the Columbia/Adair County leadership. The structure is an enduring icon of Columbia/Adair County. For the both, it represents an opportunity for economic growth. For the county, saving it will cost so much less than the cost of properly removing it and repaying the indebtedness which would be incurred. -EW

It would be sad to see Columbia, KY's Historic Courthouse fall into disrepair

Comments re photo 41426 Columbia Courthouse from Tim Lee Carter era

Richard Raines writes:
I know we no longer need the space inside our courthouse for governmental offices, but it would be sad to see such a grand old building sit unused and fall into disrepair and possible demise. I know government money is tight (to even begin to apply for help restoring it) as is private money these days. I just hope someone can come up with a way to stabilize and put it to use, along with idea to get money to keep it up before it decays or we lose it. (By the way, I know it is privately owned, but it is sad to see old Russell building - many will remember better as home of Lerman's Dept Store - slipping more and more into disrepair) --Richard Raines
Well said, Mr. Raines. I think you'll be happy to know that the fundraising is being kicked off this week, with intensive solicitation, and that CJE Ann Melton reported at the last fundraising meeting, on a plan for another cooperative effort by the City and County, with an Interlocal Agreement to fund ongoing costs a possibliity. It would be another wonderful show of cooperation. -EW

Poetry by Robert Stone: Dazzling and dwindling. A sonnet

Dazzling and dwindling- a sonnet by Robert Stone inspired by the play "Magic" by G. K. Chesterton
No conjurer am I but time and place
and person met a few occasions marked
unnoticed and no future can erase
the dazzling and the dwindling fancies sparked.

No storyteller I but of myself
and my encounters with desire and hope
that not put on "to be forgotten" shelf
diminish and expand illusions scope.

No magic undergirds the life I build
and I need reasons to continue on
so explanations good and bad are spilled
abroad to find the fertile ground at dawn.

The only way to end a fairy tale:
believe it has come true and will prevail.

- Robert Stone, 14 August 2011

New Hope Country School

In the "olden days" there were large areas of rural Nebraska served by one-room, one-teacher elementary schools. Those schools were divided into districts and provided education from grades one through eight for all the kids living in that district. The kids then attended high school in nearby towns depending on where they lived.

Freecycling ad helps put restricted gift in right hands

By Barbara Armitage

I glad to say that the stained glass pieces found a good home thanks to Columbia Magazine's Freecycling Ads. And here's the cool part - I had met the gentleman a couple of months ago but had no idea that he was interested in stained glass.

I'm happy that I could make a contribution to a window that he is designing for his wife.

Everyone has something that they don't need. For heaven's sake don't toss it out, list it on Freecycle and pass it on to someone who can use it.

Remember nothing has value unless it's being used.

Thanks again for your help!

G. Crump: How I discovered Columbia . . . when Columbus didn't

A Masterpiece a Must Re-Read for Lindsey Wilson Events: 'Someday I must go back to Lindsey Hill.' A must read for Lindsey Wilson Students, Alumni, Friends. About Columbia and Lindsey Wilson in the early 1940's, 29 April 1970. It's an essay considered by many to the the best or one of the best ever posted on ColumbiaMagazine.com, written by Gordon Crump and first posted
We post this story often. It was last on the front page of the site when Lindsey Wilson reopened its school year in August, 2010. Accolades continue to come to us. While researching Cranmer Dining center for her Adair County High School Class of '55, 55th class reunion, Annette Richards accidentally found this story, first posted on CM. "It is a masterpiece," she said. "I'm not an alum," she said, "but I couldn't hold back the tears reading Mr. Crump's story. They were happy tears. A connection, knowing that he had those feelings about my hometown. When we hold our class reunion at Lindsey, I'll step over to that side of the campus to share the feeling he had when he looked out over Columbia." We agree with Ms. Richards. The memory is a masterpiece. Mr. Crump still lives in the Clay Ridge section of Adair County. He's a member at the Clay Ridge Grocery; messages and well wishes can be left for him there when the store is open, in case you miss him when you visit. -ED WAGGENER
