Whitehurst Diaries: Argiope Aurantia and a Katydid Sharon Whitehurst is fascinated by the National Spider of Adair County, the large, beautiful Argiope Aurantia (Garden Spider). Fortunately, she's now a resident of Gradyville, KY, where residents are happiest when the spiders build their webs in every windowlight in the house. This latest episode in the continuing drama found Willis the Barn Cat not too helpful in protecting the Whitehurst herd of beneficial arachnids. Click on headline for introduction plus photo(s) By Sharon Whitehurst GRADYVILLE, KY (28 July 2011) - The four egg sacks carefully attached to a front porch post by the garden spider last season survived the snow and winds of winter. Two of them still hung there in June when Willis the Barn Cat was inspired to sweep them into the flower bed. Today, weeding on hands and knees, I discovered the new crop of garden spiders - six small zigzag-stitched webs in the clump of sedum at the south edge of the walk, and a bigger spider's construction on the other side. I've attached some photos of the occasion. Sorry, no pictures of Willis the Barn Cat in action. -Sharon Whitehurst 2011-08-01 04:35:47 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Sharon Whitehurst - Whitehurst Diaries
