Mike Watson: A favorite story from Margaret Coffey Staples Comments re article 45582: A young couple goes to Gretna Green north 1912Mike Watson writes: Ed, There are many good stories that touch upon Mr. Richeson F. "Rich" Paull. One of my personal favorites was told me by Mrs. Margaret Coffey Staples, long-time owner of Lany Bray & Company. Mrs. Staples, our neighbor on High Street until her death, in referring to Mr. Paull, would say with a twinkle of the eye, "He was Rich Paull and he was 'rich' Paull." -MWThanks. For the story and for bringing Mrs. Staples back to mind. What a class act she was! She had such elegance and poise. And Lany Bray & Company? It may have been dwarfed by counterparts in Louisville, but none there had more style. George Jr. Staples and Margaret Coffey Staples were a beautiful couple; so many of our fond memories of the fifties center around them. -EW. 2011-07-17 16:01:06 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Mike Watson - History

A Little More Likeable CM We've added a few new social media options to the site today. You can now Like, Tweet, and Plus-One all stories and photos on the site with easy links. Because of the way Facebook works, the Like buttons are on the individual story and photo pages, and not on our main news page. That way, they link back to the proper story or photo, and not just to the main page, which is always changing. (We checked, and this is how the NYT works, too). Sulphur Well Tales: Just one concern on the inebriate's mind Scotty Martin remembers a wreck on KY 70 near his boyhood home when he was a small child. A driver who had imbibed considerably more than the legal limit roared up the road from Sulphur Well, over the Hazel Jewell Hill, toward the Y. The car left the road, hit a telephone pole, and that pretty well finished the car. Scotty says he ran to see what had happened when the dazed driver emerged from the wreckage and scanned the terrible mess he had made. "Then he asked me," Scotty said, "Is I dead?" 2011-07-17 12:46:18 | Comments | Printable version
Today's CM TechLinkClick: To 12 Technologies on the way out There's an interesting list of dying technologies on the way out at www.telegraph.co.uk, which lists some surprising technologies which they say won't be around long. One, the demise of the hated Fax machine, made me euphoric; so very happy. I have a few I want to give the Office Space copier bashing treatment to. But it's bittersweet to see them predict the passing of the keyboard just when I'm trying to adapt a wireless one to a notepad. They say voice recognition will supplant keyboards. JIM: Man's humanity to Man: a Civil War tale of compassion In a Civil War reunion at Weed, Southwestern Adair County, a reunion of two old soldiers, one who had been just a boy as a Union soldier from Bluff Boom, Green Co., KY, the other a middle-aged Confederate from Tennessee who lived out his last years in Lower End of Adair County, led to a close friendship which lasted throughout the rest of their lives. Theirs is a most unusual story of twists and turns and coincidences, of defiant aid between individuals of enemy camps. In this story there is no inhumanity to man. By "Jim" This article appeared in the December 8, 1920 edition of the Adair County News. The following story has been told us and it is said that the incident which will follow actually occurred. A young couple goes to Gretna Green (north), 1912 Gentle readers: Because of the enlightened culture pervading Columbia in those days, The Adair County Newsof 1912 could allude to "Gretna Green," without being either esoteric or seeming to put on airs.
