B. Armitage did not want to give Hat Rack a bad name Barbara Armitage writes With all this talk about Hat Racking trees I'm afraid that we are giving the hardworking American Hat Rack a bad name. I purchased this one years ago at an auction in Lexington and it has served me well sometimes supporting a dozen or more ball caps at once. However, if this hat rack reminds you of the trees in your yard then you have a problem. 2011-07-10 13:50:23 | Comments | Printable version

Master Gardener class will be offered again this fall at Somerset The Adair County Garden Club is honored to have 3 Master Gardeners in its membership A Master Gardener's class will be held this fall at the Pulaski County Extension Services Office in Somerset. Those interested in attending should contact Beth Wilson, Extension Horticulturist at (606) 679-6361 or Beth.Wilson@uky.edu for more information. The Pulaski County Extension Services office is located at 28 Parkway DR, Somerset, KY. By Barbara Armitage Learn about the correct methods of pruning trees and other important gardening information by attending Master Gardener's classes. We are lucky to live in such an environmentally diverse area. Our rolling hills, rivers, lakes and even our own backyards are some of the loveliest in the country. All this beauty however comes with responsibility. My good friend A.L. Sinclair often reminds me that education is the answer. Of the many gardening and landscaping classes I have attended over the years none have even come close to the level of the Master Gardener Program. JIM. 90 years ago: Dr. Wahoo & Eld. Barger By "Jim" You can blame today's column on my fumbling fingers. My intent was to search the July 12, 1911 News for items of interest a century later, but the aforementioned fingers, recalcitrant digits that they are, typed 1921 instead. Before I could escape the clutches of fourscore and ten years ago, this item in the Montpelier newsletter caught my eye:Mr. R.A. Stone, who is taking treatment under Dr. Wahoo, is improving. Dr. Wahoo?? I rubbed my eyes and took a deep draught of, ahem, nerve restorative and general restorative, and looked again. The item still mentioned Dr. Wahoo--and off I went on a tangent, desirous to find out more about this mysterious man of medicine. It didn't take much backtracking to find a front page article from a few weeks earlier, presented as irrefutable facts to readers of the News: Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2011-07-10 11:00:01 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History

Welsh Life-long learning and fullness of appreciation In a recent sermon I referenced the novel Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. This book won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the 2006 Grawemeyer Award for Religion. I think it is a wonderful story, centering on a man who is thoroughly good and caring. The Reverend John Ames, the narrator, is a third-generation minister, the Congregational pastor in a small southwest Iowa town in the 1950's. A widower who has married again late in life and become a father, he adores his very young son who is 70 years younger than he. Ames knows that his heart problems won't let him live much longer, and he wants his son to grow up knowing some things about the Ames family history, about faith and scripture, about relationships, and about real love and grace. Wendy Butler Burt wants mutilation of roadway trees to stop Comments re article 45449 Charles Marshburn finds scholarly work on hat racking trees By Wendy Butler Burt Thanks to my friend Charles Marshburn for letting me know of additional terms for the appalling practice of tree topping. And let's not forget about another local tree mutilation practice carried out by the county road department when they "trim" roadsides by shredding/grating trees or anything else that gets in the way of what I've come to call their "roadside tree mutilator" equipment. But, back to tree topping...The topic is addressed in the UK Extension Service's Master Gardener class. In fact, the exam I was required to take before being certified as a Master Gardener included a multiple choice question about tree topping. It went something like this. "The practice of tree topping: a) leads to tree disease, insect infestation, and decay; b) is roundly condemned by trained arborists; c) leads to premature death of the tree; d) all of the above. The answer, of course, is d). Tree topping is a deplorable practice that both defaces and destroys. --Wendy Butler Burt 2011-07-10 08:07:25 | Comments | Printable version

COF clarifies Issue du Jour: Rose of Sharon v Rose of Sharon Erudite Kniflonian puts it concisely: It just a matter of prosody by the COF While it may seem that Billy Joe has indeed stumbled up a nefarious and insideous plot which appears to be perpetrated by horticulturists "from off", it may just be an unfortunate side effect of "The Great Wooded Lexicon" oncet agin leading to confusion (albeit this time in reverse). With that said, here's another theory: Whilst one of the flowers depicted is indeed the beloved Rose of Sharon, it appears tother is in reality a Rose of Sharon but pronounced as "Rose of Share-Own" as in Ariel Sharon the former Prime Minister of Israel. It's a matter of where one exaggerates the syllabic consonants or phonologically speakin' it all biles down to a matter of prosody.Obviously two different species from two different worlds jest as those from near and those from off. We may look sorta alike but it sometimes takes a passel of work and time to unfold the sameness. In the meanwhile with jest a little effort we start to see the beauty in both. s/COF at Dun Roman High on a ridge o'er beautiful Downtown Knifley where we try not to look too closely at one another. --COFComments re article 45427 Kentucky Color Rose of Sharon indeed 2011-07-10 05:20:27 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary
