Charles (Sparky) Sparks, Adair Co., KY (1961-2011) He loved his work. He loved what he did and quietly and competently performed vital roles with an extraordinary passion and absolute dedication. He commanded profound respect during his too brief lifetime - respect now realized even more in homage paid not only from members of his home town, but among colleagues across the state. It was respect shown so many times today along the path of his epic homecoming cortege from Louisville as it wended its way south through communities which lined the route with the highest symbolism of honor. It was manifest as Adair Countians met with unspoken understanding of a shared, deeply felt loss. Charles Sparks was a descendant of great pioneer Adair County families, born into a tradition of public service. He carried on that tradition with great honor. He was a Deputy Kentucky State Fire Marshal for the past 23 years, a fire and rescue instructor for the Kentucky Community Technical College System, Assistant Fire Chief of the City of Columbia Fire Department, a member of the Columbia - Adair County Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years, and an Emergency Medical Technician for the Adair County Ambulance Service. Charles Sparks was a member of the Columbia Christian Church where visitation and memorial services will be held Sunday and Monday, July 10 and 11. Charles "Sparky" Sparks, age 49 years of Columbia, KY passed away Friday, July 8, 2011 at 4:35am at the Audubon Hospital in Louisville, KY from an apparent heart attack he suffered on June 30, 2011, while fighting a house fire in the Garlin Community of Adair County. The funeral service will be Monday July 11, 2011 at 1pmCT, at the Columbia Christian Church, 206 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY 42728 with Bro. Raymond Martin & Bro. Terry White the officiating clergy. Burial will be in the Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty RD, Columbia, KY with funeral honors presented by members of the Kentucky Fire Commission, Kentucky State Fire Marshal Office and from fire departments across Kentucky. Visitation will be after 2:30pmCT, Sunday, July 11, 2011, at the Columbia Christian Church and after 6amCT, Monday until time for service at Columbia Christian Church. Letter: Extremely Proud have Kenneth Bernard as Uncle Bill Bryant writes: I am extremely proud to say that the late Kenneth Bernard was my uncle. Simply put, he represented what is right about our nation and what is right and great about the people in our country. From the battle scared shores of far away Pacific Islands to the land he treasured more than life, Kentucky, Kenneth Bernard left giant footprints and positive deeds that cannot be measured. These golden marks will last for many years to come. Thank you Uncle Kenneth, your grateful nephew. Epicurean Kentuckian: Pretty amazing fare today in Columbia, KY As Usual By Ed Waggener This may be one for the World Record Book of Guinnesses. Where else in the world can you get a Carved Prime Rib for $6.25 but in Columbia, KY? And Prime Rib is just part of the buffet! The last time I tried it it was as good as any prime rib I'd ever eaten. Would have taken a premium at the Fair. Or, also to paraphrase the words of the great Columbia Mayor Coy Downey, "the best I ever put down my goozle pipe." The last time I bought prime rib at any where near the price was a $7.25 one in Breathitt Co., KY, over a decade ago. It was just okay. Seems like I remember a lot of gristle and maybe a little bone in that Prime Rib.. (But it did come with two $1 Kentucky lottery tickets; Mulligan's isn't offering that, today.)The World's Lowest Priced Prime Rib Buffet Dinner So Far As We Know is just one of the many wonderful surprises already on What's Eating - and we aren't through posting, yet. Oh that I had more than one stomach for lunch today!-EW 2011-07-08 08:41:49 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Food
