Jim and I love to share photos of our garden. The garden triumphs, that is.

The first juicy sweet strawberries, ripe tomatoes, a bucket full of sleek green cucumbers - these all make good copy, with a subtle bit of [pardonable] pride involved.

What we less often share are the gardening failures - who wants to see a view of a zuchini plant which has just succumbed to an invasion of vine borers.

A sweet black and white dog with blue-gray eyes has found its way to our property. He has a collar, but no tag. He's very friendly and seems to miss his family. He does not stay very long but does wander on and off of the property and has been doing this for about a week. I''m not able to get a photo as my digital camera is not working right. Trust of Life: Adair County numbers improve, but are still dismal

"Jim" sent a link on Adair County's "progress" in signing up Organ Donors. He adds this unfortunate assessment, "Adair is up some but still woefully behind several of the adjoining counties." Only one of the counties, Taylor - which has nearly three times the number of donors as Adair - has a higher population. The need is great. Signing the card today as important an action as almost any of us could do today.
    1. Taylor Co., KY: 4,755 have signed organ donor cards
    2. Russell Co., KY: 4,584 have signed organ donor cards
    3. Metcalfe Co., KY: 2,098 have signed organ donor cards
    4. Casey Co., KY: 1,816 have signed organ donor cards
    5. Green Co., KY: 1,702 have signed organ donor cards
    6. Adair Co, KY: 1,688 have signed organ donor cards
    7. Cumberland Co., KY, 1,125 have signed organ donor cards

News from 100 years ago: A darker side then, brighter now

An intense study of the newspapers of 100 years ago reveals that, by today's standards, Adair County was not nearly the healthy place to live it is today. There was rampant TB, and outbreaks of diptheria, typhoid fever, whooping cough, measles, mumps and other contagious diseases on a regular basis. Death more commonly visited at a much earlier age than it does today. -EW

    By "Jim"

I try to keep the news from long ago on the light side, but now and anon, a darker side wins out. While perusing the old editions of the papers in search of material for the "100 years ago" column, headlines of articles frequently stick in my tired old mind. Here of late, three of those were:
