The recent purchase of a city park, formerly Columbia Baptist Church-Christian Life Center, was a positive addition to the community. I was very happy that the recreational use of the property would remain. It is scenic, relaxing and multipurpose. Many people use it for walking like I do.

She was a member of a large, respected Casey Co., KY family. She was retired from American Greeting Card Co. in Danville, KY, and was a member of the Liberty First Baptist Church

Norma Jane Derringer passed away Tuesday June 28 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. She was 69.

Funeral services will be at 2pmET/1pmCT, Sunday July 3, 2011 at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home, 752 Campbellsville ST, Liberty, KY, with Bro. Jimmy Brown and Bro. Casey Davis officiating. Burial is at Whited Cemetery. Visitation will be 6pm-9pmET/5pm-8pmCT, Saturday, July 2, 2011, and continue Sunday from 8amET/7amCT, until the funeral service.

Emily Hadley of Russell Springs has been awarded a W.O. and Lois Newell Scholarship to attend Somerset Community College for the fall 2011 semester. She plans to pursue a career in special education.

Hadley is a 2011 graduate of Russell County High School with a 4.0 grade point average. While in high school, Hadley was a member of Future Farmers of America, Boss Club and was inducted into the National Honor Society. She is a member of Free Union Separate Baptist Church.

Hadley is the daughter of Scott and Sondra Hadley of Russell Springs.

The W.O. and Lois Newell Scholarship was established in 2010 from funds bequeathed by Mr. and Mrs. Newell to provide scholarships to deserving students attending SCC.

Gracie May Burton is here!

Gracie May Burton was born in Glasgow, KY, just a few minutes ago, today, June 29, 2011. The brand-new Adair Countian weighed 6 lb. 9 oz. and was 19.5 inches long. She is the daughter of Doyle Burton and April Pendleton. She has a head full of lovely black hair, and, in the unbiased opinion of the reporter, "She is absolutely beautiful." The appraisal was confirmed by her equally impartial father. -Janie Potts

KSP Post 15, Columbia, KY, searching for missing Gravel Switch woman

Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY

CASEY COUNTY, KY -The Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY, is conducting a missing person investigation in regards to Patricia Ann Moddrelle (age 78) of Gravel Switch.

Mrs. Moddrelle is 5 foot 1 inches and weighs approximately 160 lbs with brown-grey hair and hazel eyes. The last contact with Mrs. Moddrelle was on June 27, 2011 and she was last seen wearing black or green pants with black or tan shoes.

Mrs. Moddrelle is possibly operating a maroon 1996 Ford Taurus station wagon with a possible destination of Danville, KY.

Anyone with information in regards to the whereabouts of Patricia Ann Moddrelle is urged to contact the Kentucky State Police or nearest law enforcement agency. Trooper A. Likins is continuing the investigation. -TFC Wm. Gregory

COLUMBIA, KY -- Students, faculty and staff in the Lindsey Wilson College School of Professional Counseling sold t-shirts to help fight malaria in Africa.

The students held a t-shirt drive this spring and summer that raised $1,870. The money was donated to the Uganda Counseling and Support Services, which is directed by LWC alumnus Ronald Kaluya.

SOMERSET, KY - Sarah Brooke Shaw of Jamestown, KY, was awarded a $350.00 scholarship by the Iota Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She will be a freshman majoring in secondary education. at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, KY, this fall.

Shaw is the 18 year old daughter of Larry and Donna Shaw of Jamestown. She graduated from Russell County High School, Russell Springs, KY, in 2011 with a 4.0 grade point average. While attending high school, Shaw was a member of the volleyball and softball teams, member of FFA, and was inducted into the National Honor Society.

Richard Thomas Emerson, Casey Co., KY (1940-2011)

He was a member of a large, respected Casey Co., KY family. He leaves 19 direct living descendants and is also survived by 33 nieces and nephews. He was a union brick mason and a member of Rolling Hills Baptist Church. He was a 51 year member of B AC Local 18, Ohio.

Richard Thomas "Rick" Emerson of Cincinnati, Ohio passed away Saturday June 25, 2011 at Mercy Fairfield Hospital. He was 71 years of age.

Funeral services will be at 2pmET/1pmCT, Friday July 1, 2011, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home, 752 Campbellsville ST, Liberty, KY, with Bro. William Haynes officiating . Burial will be in Caney Fork Cemetery. Visitation is Friday, July 1, 2011 from 10amET/9amCT, until funeral service.

Another tip: According to Barbara Armitage, our resident consulting wine expert, the Elderflowers around her need to mature for making Elderflower wine. She suggests everyone leave them alone and wait for the elderberries this fall, when a grand winemaking can commence.
