A tribute to Mr. Arvis Ray Holt

Mr. Arvis Ray Holt, late Sgt. Holt of the US Army, my distant kinsman and former neighbor in Russell County, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011. His obituary (with parts of this tribute incorporate)_ states he served in the military and that he was a POW during World War Two.

There's more to the story.

Arvis Ray "jined up" in June, 1940, and was among some of the first troops sent to North Africa. On February 17, 1943, he was one of many US soldiers captured by the German forces in the Battle of the Kasserine Pass, Tunisia, North Africa, four months and five days past his 22nd birthday. He remained a prisoner of war until liberated by US troops in the spring of 1945, just days after Adolph Hitler's unlamented death. In a letter dated May 8, 1945, Arvis Ray wrote this to his parents, who hadn't heard from him since December, 1944:

Poetry by Billy Joe Fudge: Low, distant rumblings

Low, Distant Rumblings
By Billy Joe Fudge
To be awaken from restful slumber
By low distant rumblings of
Harmless, innocuous thunder is
Pleasing,
Pleasant,
And calming, beyond compare.

Then carried back in time
By the drumming of vertical
Shafts of rain upon my
Roof,
Gutter,
And trees, I dream on.

I dream as in the innocence
Of youth which escapes adults
Except during times of
Splendor,
Ecstasy,
And Peace, like this.

As the passing flurry of
Rumblings and drummings
Departs I am somehow
Renewed,
Empowered,
And Invigorated by youth.

Jim: Incidents in the lives of three Adair countians

Judge James Garnett declined to take advantage of elements. James R. Hindman got his political and religious wires crossed. Col. Frank Wolford proved again that 'No man ever engaged in a political debate with Wolford when he was in his prime, who did not come out of it second best.'

By "Jim"

In the summer of 1916, Mr. Will S. Kaltenbacher of the Courier-Journal penned for that paper a brief word sketch of an incident in the life of Judge James Garnett (died 1905), and another in the life of former Lt. Gov. James R. Hindman (died 1912). Of the former, he wrote of Judge Garnett putting principle and integrity above political gain; of the latter, he wrote of Gov. Hindman landing in a rather humorous soup of his own making.

The July 19, 1916 News carried a reprint of the article, presented in substance below.

Memories: Foxhunting with Mr. Combest and Grandfather Flatt

Going on those hunts was exciting for a boy from Chicago. A mystery, still unsolved, is why, in all their foxhunts, they never saw a fox. Even so, whittling cedar around the mandatory campfire and listening to the tales of these master hunters is still unforgettable for the writer

By Tony Harvey

My grandparents Otha & Fannie Flatt use to own a farm just down the road from a man who they were very good friends with. His name was Dewey Combest and he lived on KY 92 or what is better known as Montpelier Road. Mr Combest was a very friendly person to me and always had some Juicy Fruit gum with him. He also would come to my grandparents' home to play their favorite card game, Rook. They would play for what seemed like many hours at a time, but I'm sure though it wasn't over 2-3 hours.
