Farm Service Agency announces 2 deadlines

By Tony Corbin

The Farm Service Agency reminds farmers of the following deadlines:
  • May 31, 2011: Final date to report small grain acreages, including wheat, oats and barley

  • June 1, 2011: Final date to enroll in the 2011 Direct and Counter-cyclical Program (DCP). The DCP Program provides payments to eligible producers on farms enrolled for the 2008 through 2012 crop years. There are two types of DCP payments - direct payments and counter-cyclical payments. Both are calculated using the base acres and payment yields established for the farm

Mr.McCammish comments on CM Mobile Technology Board attire

Comments re photo 40504 CM mobile technology board meetingDoug McCammish writes:
Do granddads have to wear a tie to go to Shelbyville? If so, I'll probably not. (If my grandkids were that close, I'd wear a tux!) -Doug
Thanks. You're right. At least it's not like the sorry sartorial state of banking in Columbia, where today one can get turned down for a loan by a President wearing a golf shirt! That hurts. Just 60 years ago bankers at least had the compassion to turn you down wearing a three-piece suit, in a dignified manner. Your comment does remind me of my favorite quote about grandchildren, from Charles Marshall quoting his brother J.C. Marshall, who said, "They sure named them right when they called them grand kids." Thanks again, Mr. McCammish. -EW

What kind of snake did Shamarie shoot?

Comments re photo 40486. Life in the Holler Good van for sale with surprises

Ann Goff writes:
I was just wondering what kind of snake that is? Shamarie, you had to be brave to get that photo of it, but that was interesting. Thanks, -Ann Goff
Actually, we're told, Shamarie is terrified of snakes. So one would have to call a person so impaired, "Brave," we'd guess. It's bravery possibly meriting a Kentucky Colonelcy, but certainly not worthy of Adair County Generalship status. This valuable ecologically friendly rodent-ridder goes unappreciated by the famed photographer and Life in the Holler chronicler. Years of trying to cure Shamarie's Herpetophobia, using the well proven Rubber Snake Surprise Therapy technique. by members of her male dominated family have proven fruitless thus far. She says that her husband Kevin, who is totally rational about the value of the rat killer, says it is a Cow Snake. Local lore has it that Cow Snakes have a fractious personality and chase people, especially those who turn and run. -CM

Poetry by Robert Stone: Some small but major

Some small but major
-a sonnet for Bob Beimdick on his birthday
He had just been or was or soon would be
in chair, at table, or behind work desk
with cheerful greeting smile for all to see,
epitome of anti-Kafkaesque.

His talk revealed a knowledge wide and deep
of places, peoples, and events held fast
with cherished times to cheer and times to weep,
with future fun to find, with thankful past.

He listened with attentive ear to all
and made some small but major choice remark
and would the good promote and bad forestall,
would dim the arrogant and light the dark.

Whenever thinking of his being gone
a ping of pain is eased by life well drawn.

-Robert Stone, 22 May 2011
Bob Beimdick, long-time employee at The Bookstore and friend as well of Tom Chaney, died February 2, 2011. This sonnet was inspired by observations by Steve Self.
