Just a few days ago he ran a horse with Phil Combest listed as the owner. I remember the Combest brothers being stabled at this same track in the early 80's when we wintered in Florida. Doesn't want Columbia to be another used to be town Rita Smith writes: Thanks Ed for your input. Was well appreciated to finally hear some truth in the matter. Always knew that had a bearing on the problem and as I continue getting up at 4 in the morning to drive 20 miles to work, I just deal with it. We can't have progress in this town if everyone is not willing to work together. Eventually we will be just another little "used to be" town that once was, although it somewhat is now. Do you remember the stores in town like I do? Thanks, Ed, for allowing me to voice my opinion. -Rita SmithComments re article 44485. Wants to find out more on Combest Bros. Resident of Combest DR wants more information about once very famous Adair County family, whose legacy justified changing a county road to honor them Comments re article 44479 Joppa It means Beautiful Brent Thompson writes: I live on the old Bloyd farm in Joppa. Our road first was Bloyd RD and then it was changed to Combest DR. I've always wondered where that name came from. Ed, I saw that you mentioned the Combest brothers in your reply and I was just curious to find out a little something about who they were. Now I know where the name came from though. Brent ThompsonThanks. I thought we'd get more on the Combest Brothers sooner. Maybe your letter will help. One of them very much associated with racing was Nick Combest. His brother was the more famous jockey, I believe; and sort of remember that the brother rode in at least one Kentucky Derby. I remember Reed Combest, another brother, better. He had a Dodge dealership in the 1950's at the Fabulous Four-Way intersection where Holt's Parkway Auto Repair is today, at 1011 Jamestown ST, Columbia, KY. Can never forget seeing an epic automotive advance there - no velcro invention, but impressive - when Reed Combest showed the first three - tone cars in Columbia. Up to that time, mankinds progress had been limited to two tone cars. -EW 2011-05-22 09:00:51 | Comments | Printable version
JIM: 95 years ago, a windy letter from Rep. Harvey Helm Jim notes that 'too little can not be said of Rep. Helm's letter. But it was a great time in Columbia, with The Lindsey Wilson graduation, society folks enjoying strawberries and cake, major realignments of Columbia businesses, a famed fisherman being bested by brand new bride, and an amazing story of the long-lived McKinley and son, and other astounding details too numerious to list. CM Ninety-five years ago: odds 'n' ends from the News, May 24, 1916 By Jim Commencement goings-on at the Lindsey Wilson Training School and a windy letter from U.S. Representative Harvey Helm of Stanford, KY, adorned much of the front page of this edition of the News. Of the former, suffice it to say that the L.W.T.S. graduates were Miss Virginia Coffey (expression); Miss Carrie Willan (music); and Misses Ruth Hynes and Edna Chewning and Messrs. Marvin Perryman and Edgar Harris (high school). Of Rep. Helm's letter, too little can not be said. Perhaps the most obvious difference is that the people of Marion Co., KY, are willing to pay the upfront costs of securing industry.
