Jim: A Brief History of Early Cinema in Columbia, Ky., c. 1903 to late 1922 - V (Part 5 of 6): An Unscheduled Intermission: The Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 By "Jim" An Unscheduled Intermission: The Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 The second wave of the deadly influenza pandemic started in the northeast in August, 1918, and spread rapidly, greatly exacerbated by the never-ceasing flow of soldiers going from base to base and traveling on furloughs. There were weekly mentions of the comings and goings of Adair County boys stationed at Camp Taylor in Jefferson County and the then-fledgling army camp at Stithton (now known as Fort Knox). The best thing about small towns By Jim Some wag quipped that the best thing about small towns is that everyone knows you, and the worst thing is that everyone knows you. Case in point of the first half of that comment: About two weeks ago, my long-time acquaintance Carthel Porter passed from this vale of tears. Now generally, when a friend passes, my child bride and I make a small donation to a charity or church in lieu of sending flowers, but for some folks, flowers truly do say it best, and Carthel definitely fell in the "some folks" category. The day before the funeral, I called my favorite florist within the bounds of the Sacred Triangle over in Russell County (where I haven't lived for nigh onto forty years) and after the obligatory exchange of greetings, told Steve I needed to place an order. That's all I said. He replied, "These are for Carthel, right?"Gotta love small towns :)- JIM 2011-05-21 07:48:21 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary
Joppa: It means Beautiful Maury Lewis writes: Ed you are always saying the area I live in is called Joppa and I was reading in Acts yesterday and it mentioned Joppa. I looked up the word and it means "beautiful." So I guess I live in the beautiful part of Adair County. -Maury LewisThanks for finding and sharing the definition with us. Indeed, Joppa is a beautiful part of Adair Co., KY, and the birthplace and home of so many famous people it would be hard to list them all. But you have to be proud of the famed horsemen, the Combest brothers; and of journalist Fred Troutman and his brothers; writer M.E. Lewis; and Cosby Cundiff, the friend and co-conspirator of Byron Crawford; all the Youngs, including author Garnett Young, and the Green Bros., writer Sonja Foley McKinney, the wonderful Markles, not to mention Harlan Brown, who was so successful in his line of work. Joppa is a beautiful, historic place. You are indeed fortunate to live there, so near to Zion. -EW 2011-05-21 07:41:45 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
