Murder trial at 9amCT for Wellie Paul Grant

Grant is accused in June 10, 2006 churchyard shooting death of Rex L. Coffey

The jury trial of Commonwealth vs. Wellie Paul Grant starts at 9amCT, is scheduled for 9amCT, this morning, Wednesday, May 18, 2011 in Adair Circuit Court, Adair Judicial Center, 201 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY. Grant faces charges of 1) Murder, and 2) Fleeing or evading police, 1st degree.

The murder trial stems out of a sensational shooting case which occurred almost five years ago, on Saturday, June 10, 2006, at around 10pmCT, when prominent Columbia businessman Rex Coffey, owner of Rex's Cycle, was killed while on a church picnic at Beech Grove Separate Baptist Church, on KY 900 near Glens Fork, KY.

Grant was arrested in the remote Sand Lick Roard area in South Adair County, 12 hours later, after an intensive manhunt.

Lengthy delays related to Grant's competency to stand trial stretched the trial start date to almost 5 years after the shooting/fleeing incident.

The Hilda Legg race: votes by Columbia area counties impressive

With higher turnout, registered Republicans in Adair County could have delivered the Statewide margin to deliver the race to Knifley native

By Ed Waggener

Adair County's Hilda Legg received a tremendous vote in her race for the Republican nomination for Secretary of State from Adair and surrounding counties, with a high of 89.59% of the vote in her native county, and an impressive 74.21% in her current home, Pulaski County.

  • 1) Adair Co vote for Hilda Legg, 89.59%
  • 2) Russell Co. vote for Hilda Legg, 73.78%
  • 2) Taylor Co. vote for Hilda Legg, 73.78%
  • 4) Green Co. vote for Hilda Legg, 69.92%
  • 5) Casey Co. vote for Hilda Legg: 63.78%
  • 6) Cumberland Co. vote for Hilda Legg, 63.54%
  • 7) Metcalfe Co. vote for Hilda Legg, 57.94%
Hilda Legg received a tremendous margin of victory in Pulaski County, where she currently resides, with a vote of 3,709 to 1,289, and 74.21% of the vote.

While the vote was impressive by statewide comparison, the very sad commentary is that if there had been just a 50% or more voter turnout in the Republican primary, and the percentages held the same, Adair County would likely have delivered enough votes, alone, to have decided the race statewide in favor of Legg.
