100 years ago: Commencement week on Arbor Vitae hill Prophetic Words: Columbia has almost doubled its population in the last eight years, and its rapid rise is due in great measure to the Lindsey-Wilson. That the school will continue to prosper, the town continue to advance in growth, no one who is acquainted with the workings of the institution, has the slightest pretext to deny. - JOHN ED MURRELL, in the Adair County News, May 24, 1911 Click on headline for full story plus photo(s) By Jim 100 years ago: Commencement week on Arbor Vitae hillCommencement at "the Lindsey-Wilson" was considerably different a century ago. The end-of-term activities kicked off on Saturday, May 13th, with the annual L.W.T.S. (Lindsey Wilson Training School) Field Day, for which the admission fee was twenty-five cents, the prizes were plentiful, and the fun nearly endless. In some of the more unusual competitions, Guy Stevenson and Frank B. Hulse took first and second in the somersault race; Hulda McFarland and Leontine Leachman took top honors in the candy eating contest; and Miss Alva Knight of Jamestown carried the day in the girls' wheelbarrow race. Comments on Stamp out Hunger campaign Comments re article 44342. Today Help Columbia KY Postal Carriers Stamp out Hunger Carolyn Plahuta writes: I'm all for helping the needy. But the hungry in Adair County and the rest of Kentucky wouldn't be as hungry if they spent their money on food instead of those expensive cigarettes. It seems to be the poor who smoke the most. -Carolyn PlahutaHope this doesn't mean you'd withhold food from hungry families just because a parent spends money on cigarettes. I can't think of any good reason not to support the Postal Carriers Stamp Out Hunger or the Food Pantry - especially not parental mishavior. Smoking would seem an unrelated matter. -Ed Waggener 2011-05-15 08:32:02 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Twins, birthdays Another Angle, the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor. Some Biblical twins, some 20th century twins, and a birthday appreciation . First published 14 May 2006, in the Hart County News-Herald The next earlier Another Angle Remembrances of Juleps past, about the Kentucky Derby and Mint Juleps. By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh There aren't many twins mentioned in the Bible, and the ones who are noted are a troubled, conflicted lot. Jacob and Esau (Genesis 25 and following) were competitors in the womb, and their conflict continued into their adult life. The disciple of Jesus, Thomas (also called Didymus - or "the twin") is known to us primarily as Doubting Thomas because of events related to us in John 20. We are told nothing of Thomas' twin.
