Incident at School this week involved toy gun

Matter a serious one, but students were never in real danger

Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

A 15 year old male was handcuffed and taken into custody on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, following an incident first believed to have involved a firearm, but which was later found to be a toy pistol.

Adair County School Superintendent Darrell Treece called CM on Friday, May 13, 2011, to dispel any rumors about what happened in an incident at the Adair County School District campus on Wednesday, May 11, 2011.

"The incident occurred after school, while buses were loading," Superintendent Treece said. "A carload of what was thought to be students came through the loading area. A boy in the car waved what looked like a gun out the window, and a bus driver at the scene called David (Director of Student Transportation David Jones), who in turn alerted SRO (School Resource Officer) Kevin Atwood ," Superintendent Treece said.

"David Jones blocked the car's escape with his own car, and police and sheriffs then descended on the scene with sirens on and lights flashing. There was a lot of excitement," Superintendent Treece added."It was a serious matter," Mr. Treece said, "But we want parents to know that an actual firearm was not present and students were never in any real danger."
