Word on some of the additional things needed in Alabama Pastor Troy Long, Jr. writes: Ed, I recently talked to my mother who lives in south Mississippi. Some of her coworkers went to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, this past weekend to help with the relief efforts. Some of the things needed in addition to the non-perishable food items were hand-held can openers, toilet paper, paper towels, and other cleaning supplies. They are also in need of baby food, diapers, and other baby supplies. I thought I would pass this information along to those who were interested in helping. Safety Zone 2011: ACHS takes part in mock DUI Trial Click on headline for full story plus photo(s) By Ellen Zornes Friday morning, April 22, and Monday morning, April 25, Adair County High School juniors participated in the seventh annual "Safety Zone DUI Awareness. The idea for "Safety Zone" came about as an effort to demonstrate to our driving students the importance of driving safely and how alcohol and other drugs can so severely impede their driving abilities. Young drivers just don't seem to understand the magnitude that driving entails and how even one drink of an alcoholic beverage or the use of other drugs can have such disastrous consequences. It is our hope through "Safety Zone" to get that point across. This year we added a segment about the importance of not texting while driving. Thinks Walmart should change its policies Comments re photo 40212 Bob Barnes tornado relief truck moved from WalmartAlberta G. Janes writes: I think Columbia Walmart should be ashamed, and people should shop some place else for a while, give them something to think on. They might change their policies. -Albert G. JanesWe understand your feelings. It was unfortunate. But the fact remains, whether you like Walmart or not, this one is a huge part of the Columbia area economy. Not shopping there because of the incident may prove a point, but at the expense of our good neighbors and friends who work there. Bentonville might hardly notice. -EW 2011-05-03 10:40:33 | Comments | Printable version

Reader hopes $4,500 collected won't be spent at Walmart Comments re article 44080 In regards to Mr Barnes moving his relief effort from Walmart parking lotSue M. Smith writes: I just hope the $4500 that was collected will not be spent at a Walmart! -Sue M. SmithCM has learned for sure, that $2,000 originally designated for the Columbia Walmart was given to Bob Barnes to spend anywhere else but the Columbia Walmart or any Walmart after the incident. However, we would like to note that if the Columbia Walmart is punished, in the end, it is our neighbors and friends who work there who pay for it. As they do when there is a theft at the store, as our local Walmart employees pay for it when carts are abused or the community does not help keep the store and grounds clean. (We noticed that Columbia area people do just that; they treat the property as if it were their own.) No doubt this is bad PR for the local store. Hope there is a learning lesson and all can be forgiven. -EW 2011-05-03 05:43:24 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
