MaryLink: Mary Keltner sends link to city story on country stores Mary Keltner found this New York Times story about The Trap Family market, now run by Abdelilah Rafas from Morocco. The story is evocative of the situation on US 127, in Russell Springs, KY, where the Patel family has livened up the county store with rag'ler items plus boiled peanuts and is thinking about bringing authentic Indian food to The County. To access this MaryLink, click to: City Ways Tried, a Market Finds Rural Work by Kim Severson. A comment: When you live here at The Center of the Universe, aren't you often surprised at how city folks go wild over places just like we have here. Nashville, IN, is a mere Burton Ridge in Southern Indiana, but hordes of city folk from Indianapolis, Louisville, and Cincinnati drop their jaws when they first see the vistas there, which pale by comparison with the view from Alpine Hill in Burkesville, KY. -EW 2011-04-27 08:09:39 | Comments | Printable version
Rotary Auction brings in another $4,500: Total now $8,600 George Kolbenschlag writes: Ed. Our auction brought in right at $4500 this evening making the two day total $8600. We had a lot of support from the donors, buyers and friends like you and CM. Thanks. -George Kolbenschlag, Columbia, KentuckyThanks for including us in your letter. On this one, we want to defer to the Columbia Rotary Club and the extraordinary generosity of Columbia's two fine radio stations, WHVE and WAIN, for donating valuable air time. And it goes without saying, but must be noted, again, how lucky we are to live in such a giving community. This effort exemplifies The Adair County Way at its best. CM was honored to play a part.-EW 2011-04-27 07:03:20 | Comments | Printable version
Big Al Owens standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona Big Al, the Big Rig Trucker: The Eagles' Album, Winslow, AZ Click on headline for introduction and photos Big Al shared his top three photos from Winslow, AZ, where he stood, relived, and remembered perhaps the Eagles' most famous line. Metrics are not yet available on the popularity of this Travel piece by Big Al, but we can tell you, from the response in letters, "The figgers are good." Fan mail was high, too, though many are viscerally disappointed and dejected by the writer's failure to send any news about the eats in Arizona, if there are any there worthy of an Epicurean Kentuckian. Arizona, at least near America if not part of it, is also famous as the boyhood home of Larry Legg. Big Rig Trucker: Big Al visits USS Texas in Houston Click on headline for story plus photo(s) Big Al Owens, the Big Rig Trucker The USS Texas was an American battleship which is anchored in the port of Houston. The ship is located across from the San Jacinto Monument, which honors the rich tradition of the Texas Independence movement. I toured the ship and was fascinated by its great history. This ship actually served in both World Wars. I was too scared of heights to go up too high on some of the lookout perches. I did see the Captains quarters though.Smile. -Big Al 2011-04-27 05:40:39 | Comments | Printable version Birthdays and Anniversaries for April 27 Happy Birthday, Aaron Roach | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Angie Melson | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Holly Wood | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Kenneth Lefaivre | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Leslie Bryant Bennett | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Linda Ninnie Smith | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Mike Green | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Samantha Allison Oliver (April 27, 2009) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Samantha D.
