1899 Invention: Mr. Williams' improved telephone A more perfect instrument (but did it have call waiting?) By "Jim" The ingenuity of Adair Countians never ceases to amaze. Case in point: this article about an improved telephone devised by Luther Williams of Montpelier (this Luther being the son of a well-known man of the cloth, Ed. Z.T. Williams). The article appeared in the May 10, 1899 Adair County News. Mr. Luther Williams, who has done much work in operating telephone lines through this section of the State in the last few years, has recently made what he considers a great improvement in the telephone. A sample phone is now in Reed & Miller's office, and the operator finds it much more convenient than the ones heretofore in operation. This phone is a combination of three different instruments, the strong points of all three combined, making a more perfect instrument. Also the construction makes it a more convenient toll-line phone, by having the ringing apparatus in the center instead of above. Kentucky Color: Transplanted Trillium Click on headline for story plus photo(s) By Billy Joe Fudge, retired District Forester Kentucky Division of Forestry My transplanted Trillium is doing well and yours could be, also. While traipsing around in the wild or driving around the countryside enjoying the wildflowers you might want to take some home with you, with landowner permission of course. A couple of things to remember are: if the plant is growing in the shade or full sun then transplant them into similar conditions, spade underneath the plant and get a spade full of soil (a small ball if you will) to keep from exposing the root mass as much as possible, and carry some plastic grocery bags to put each plant into, root first, to prevent the roots and soil from excessive drying. Transplant as soon as you get home, water the plant for a few weeks if needed, and don't be discouraged if the plant dies away during the year you plant it. Most likely it will emerge in your very own transplanted wildflower garden the following year in full glory right on schedule. 2011-04-26 16:10:44 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Kentucky Color by Billy Joe Fudge

Thinks there is a painting in Winslow, AZ photo from Big Al Owens Comments re article 43959. Big Al Standing on the Corner in Winslow AZMaury Lewis writes: Barbara and I think that is a painting behind him. Something like that painted on that big gray wall downtown coming up Jamestown Street would look great. - Maury LewisMaury: Thanks. They've talked and talked about murals, but, for now, to see a lot of them, you have to go to out of town, to Antioch, Burkesville, Greensburg, and Campbellsville to see some really great ones. With great artists like we have in Columbia and Adair County, that seems a shame. -EW 2011-04-26 08:20:16 | Comments | Printable version
Columbia Post Office was in Mouser Real Estate office. For a fact David Wells writes: This was the corner post office prior to moving to hotel building. When I remodeled the office in 1962 there were still signs of the layout of the partitions. At the "pickup" window the floor is worn where customers turned to leave the office. The parcel window was on the right side of the office and the left side had the "boxes". The mail was brought in through the barber shop (the famed Travis Scott/Rollen Coomer/Wid Harris barber shop -CM) area. - David WellsThat establishes the fact. Thanks, David Wells, for coming up with the definitive answer. We're hoping a history expert will be able to come up with the exact years the post office was at the corner, and maybe someone will have a photo or four or more.-EW 2011-04-26 05:58:26 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History
