Mike Watson: Columbia PO has always been near the Square

Comments re article 43924 Reader raises question about Post Office location

By Mike Watson

The Columbia Post Office has always been on or near to the Public Square. The first postal records are no longer available, but there are complete official records from circa 1815 to the present at the National Archives. However, post office locations were not usually noted in the official record until the past half century, since most offices were provided by the postmaster who owned or rented the space in his or her own name.

Jim calculates Wm Dudgeon ginseng crop in today's dollars

With this revelation, maybe the CM phone won't be ringing off the hook this morning, as we had fretted about so.

"According to the inflation calculator I use now and anon , $888 in 1907 would be the equvalent of $20,500 in 2010 dollars," Jim writes, to clearify this item from his latest masterpiece, Jim, 103.5 years ago: Some of the news that was fit to print:
Wm. Dulworth, "the largest ginseng cultivator in Adair County," had the previous week hauled to Louisville 148 pounds of the rare root he had grown and returned home $888 richer. About the same time, Clem Banks of Cane Valley sold to R.T. Dudgeon three ginseng roots, weighing in at eight ounces, for the princely sum of three dollars and twenty-two and a half cents, "the largest amount ever paid in Adair for three roots..."
As great an item as this is, there is at least one which eclipses it by miles. It's the notice from Jake Smith posting his pond as off limits to baptizings. -EW

It's almost like mankind's greatest intellectual endeavor: Shakespearean criticism. I had to give it up when I discovered that there was Criticism of the criticism of the criticism of the criticism of the criticism of the criticism of an original work of the William Shakespeare.
