Birds of Kentucky: Starling rules Johnson School RD

2011-04-23 - Johnson School RD, Fairplay, District 3, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
For a brief time, at least A starling ruled over this part of North Johnson School Road, from an aery fit for a hawk or eagle. Making one wonder: Do birds pretend they are more? Does a starling plike, for a time, it's a red tailed hawk? For sure, the starling commanded a magnificent view of the valley from dead tree mast with about as much character as any in Adair County. The photo was taken Saturday afternoon, April 23, 2011.

Remembers wonderful 12 cent Jiffy Burgers downtown

Comments re photo 40069 Harris Building Eye level historic details

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I can still taste those wonderful 12 cent Jiffy Castle burgers from that little brick building on the right in this photo. Great food, not much room, but always a crowd on Saturday. -Billy Joe Fudge
Hush! This makes me hungry for those little Jiffy delicacies, but even more for Chili Omelets from the successor Angel's Cafe, and everything from great breakfasts, to wonderful chicken salad, tuna fish salad, even Annie Rooney potato salad, and the fresh cut salads ever, in the successor cafe by the same Angel's name. Elaine Bennett owned and operated it and her sister Trilby baked those wonderful pies there. It was a great place to start a day. Wonder what ever happened to those Harvey girls - Elaine and Trilby - who ran it? -EW

Reade Heskamp asks if pinhookers still practicing art

Reade Heskamp writes:
Recently in scanning one of your articles I ran across a reference to someone who was a "Pinhooker."

Among other things, my Grandfather Ben Heskamp, of Coburg, was also a Pinhooker.

Wonder if there still are some, practicing the art?

Maybe there is a lexicographer or a folk historian who could tell us more. -CM

Six Russell County names appear on Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Comments re article 43888 Joe Hare offers to take photos to Somerset for The Wall Exhibit

The names of six Russell County men appear on the Vietnam Wall. To the best of my knowledge, this list is correct and complete. The third line of each entry is the date on which the soldier died; the 4th line is the location on the wall of the soldier's name.

When was post office in corner building, reader asks

Comments re photo 40069 Harris Building Eye level historic detailsMartha Berry writes:
Ed, isn''t that the corner of Campbellsville St. and the Square? If so, when was the PO in that building? My first memory of the PO was in a building that was torn down many years ago, but today would be about where the Court House Annex is. It was in the corner of the Square next to the old Miller Hotel, what would be about at the far left edge of the picture. I really don't remember what was in the Mouser Building at the time but it seems like at one time there was a watch shop, among other businesses, maybe the first site of Ples Grimsley's? Or Royse's, maybe. - Martha Berry
You are right about the watch shop, there was one; but it was Casey Jones' Jewelry Shop. The post office was in the building, according to stories my father told me, before it was moved to the Hotel Miller building, which stood at the site of the present Adair Annex, 424 Public Square. The late Ray Flowers was postmaster, both in its last days in the little corner building and after it moved to the 424 Public Square Corner. My father, the late E.P. Waggener, carried Rural Route 1, at the time. That route wounded around up around Green River Country. Later, he helped established Rural Route 2, which included areas around Bliss, Gradyville, Weed, Sparksville, and The Flatwoods. -ED

By Ed Waggener

Linda Waggener wants to know, "Is there a way to get a list of each Vietnam Veteran named on the Wall from the CM coverage area of Adair, Metcalfe, Green, Taylor, Casey, Russell and Cumberland Counties? I'd like to do all we can to maintain a checklist and spread the word so families and friends can hopefully collect photos of each and every service person named on the wall. CM can maintain photo files for those who can't go to the event and deliver the photos."

Joe Hare visits with family of fallen Vietnam squad member

Click on headline for story plus photo(s) Visit memorial to Sam Scriven, click to Samuel T. Scriven on the Virtual Wall.

On March 21st Joe Hare along with fellow Black Lions from the Vietnam War, Ron Moreno, Dale Carry and Joe Karczyniski visited with the family of Sam Scriven, in Ocala, FL. Sam was serving in the same squad with Joe Hare and Ron Moreno when he gave his life for our country on 1 May 1967.

We had the honor of meeting Sam's mother, three brothers and one sister along with many in-laws, nieces and nephews. While there Sam's mother was presented with a picture that was painted by Eric Hare, Joe's son, as a high school project that was a copy of a picture that Joe took of Sam. It was probably the last picture made of Sam before his death. -Joe Hare

Thanks. Everybody is wondering about that - whether or not Lawrence Hamilton trained the turtles and staged the singing, or what. Haven't checked with the Photography Police, but that would probably be legal. - EW
