Great Wooded South Lexicon IV

Today's lesson is on: Fair, Midlyn, Fair to midlyn, scuse me, and mercy sakes

Previous Lexicon: Great Wooded South Lexicon III: Finally, warsh rag, wirehouse
Next Lexicon: Great Wooded South Lexicon V: Unthaw, fanger, and more

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

I hope the Great Wooded South Lexicon is of assistance to those who need assistance and even more I hope it helps us to preserve our rich heritage of language. All you guys and gals keep the suggestions coming. Remember: Language is at its best when it says the most while saying the least
  • Fair: Word denoting one's physical condition meaning in most cases that the subject is somewhat better than "barely above ground"

  • Midlyn: The cut of meat on a hog from which bacon is sliced. Sometimes referred to as "side meat"

  • Fair to midlyn: Phrase expressing one's physical condition to be a little more satisfactory than "Fair"

  • Scuse me: Pardon me

  • Mercy sakes:An expression of amazement, surprise or a feeling of being overwhelmed
More local, language, lexicon enlightener's forthcoming as the need comes to our attention and I am thankful for all the help from CM readers and contributors. I am inspired and enlightened daily by CM and all those who make it such a special gathering place. -Billy Joe Fudge

Sharon Whitehurst essay gets a Top 10 on CM, Ever, Rating

Critique is from highest level, from "Jim," who heretofore had rated a tie for Number 1 for Gordon Crump's G. Crump: How I discovered Columbia . . . when Columbus didn't, and Julia Ann Pickett's Raising Julia Ann Pickett was a full-time, full-town chore. "Jim" has not filled in the rest of the Top 10, but this is a good start. Other readers would surely put many of 'Jim' piece in the Top Ten Greatest CM Articles, Ever, list, we're sure. - Ed Waggener

In Georgia, they call them Cat Whiskers

Writer raises volatile, divisive old issue of "Grandpa's Whiskers" vs. "Cat Whiskers"

Emily Greenway writes:
Picture of pink "grandpa whiskers"?

These are called "cat whiskers" in GA. Grandpa's whiskers are white and grow on a tree. -Emily Greenway
Comment above re story was posted on 2009-08-09 at 07:24:01, Beautiful pink flower known as spider plant or grandpa's whiskers, based on information supplied by Charles Marshburn of Atlanta, GA, and Fairplay, KY. At ColumbiaMagazine.com, we're mere functionaries, posting what we're told. We'd hope all the Georgians - bless their hearts - could get together and make up their collective mind on the subject, and not be steering up passions among the locals, especially during the high holy days and the SC Kentucky mating season. -EW

The registration deadline has now been extended until May 16, 2011.We need everyone who has old graduation programs from the their graduation to look on those and let me know their classes color, flower and motto.

Please email me this information at auntm@duo-county.com or call at (270) 378-6078. We would like to do some banners for the reunion based on the classes that are coming.

Also, we have people registered from all of the classes 81-87 but the most registrants are from the classes of 83 and 84 and I know those other classes would hate to see these two classes beat the others on the registrations.-Marian Grant

The War Between the States: A retrospective

Watching Ken Burns' The Civil War and memories of a visit to a Civil War Cemetery evoked memories for Sharon Whitehurst of her husband's Confederate forebears from Goldsboro, Pitt Co., NC, and of her own Great Great Grandfather, a 39 year old farmer from Hague, NY, enlisted for the Union Army. These are brief comments on their service and the conclusions drawn from their stories by the writer: 'Whatever the allegiance of our respective families, few of that era emerged from the war years unscathed. It was a war that should never have been,' -Sharon Whitehurst
