The Cat came back

The urgent search for Sheila Owens' big yellow cat has been called off. The cat is back. He had found a sulking place up under a neighbor's house, as big yellow cats are wont to to do. Big Al Owens says thanks to all who were concerned and helped with the search. "He's been with us a long, long time," he said. "He's one of the family."

Foal: Getting land legs

2011-04-16 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Jennifer Crawhorn.
Jennifer Crawhorn notes that a foal whose progress she's following doesn't seem to be a wobbly now, that it's seeming to get its land legs. Seen in the ColumbiaMagazine group on Flickr.

The Venerable COF contributes to GWS Lexicon

Elemental Knifleyese, twernt and pon nominated for epic tome
Comments re article 43715 Countian shocked by how Adair County living ages one

By the learned Mr. COF
PhD of UK/K - University of proper speakin, Knifley, KY

Always eager to contribute to the ejucation of those eager to learn to speak properly.

Take for example:
  • Twernt: now this is the Past Tense of "taint" as in Hit taint no good as apposed to Hit twernt no good. You kin plainly see thet one is the here an now en t'other wuz awhile back.

  • Pon:Then there's "pon" tho this seems to be more favored by the distaff side. I've ofen heard Pon my soul, I nevah heerd of sich.
My hope is thet those from far off will 'ciprocate in kind an endeavor to splain some of the hi-faluting lingo they seem to favor or jest mebbe they don't even understand themownselves.

Travel: Bridgeport Beauty. An album by Johnnietta Jessie

Click on headline for introduction plus photos

By Ed Waggener

Johnnietta Jessie frequently walks the roads and streams around Bridgeport, just over the hill from Bennett Ridge in Adair County, and records scenes of one of the most picturesque communities seen anywhere.

The old town, also know as East Fork, once had its own post office and general store, run last, maybe, by Zack Coleman.

GWS Lexicon fame spreads - reaches new breadth across US of A

This bulletin just in from the Land Beyond Clay Ridge; a highly respected Adair County native comments on the wonderful language which is our Mother Tongue
Comments re article 43708 Great Wooded South Lexicon Gob passel and more

from Dale Curry
Late of this place

Can hardly wait for more words from the Great Wooded South Lexicon.

In high school, I studied German (thanks, Mrs. Woody) and at a wonderful Baptist institution, I studied Greek and Hebrew.

But perhaps the most wonderful language is that spoken by southern Kentuckians.

Even those of us who have migrated as far north as Greensburg still understand the words in this article.

Thanks a gob for posting them here. -Dale Curry

Dr. Dave Burton sends three treasures for GWS Lexicon

Comments re article 43708 Great Wooded South Lexicon Gob passel and moreDr. Dave Burton is submitting items for the Mr. Fudge's Great Wooded South Lexicon, commenting, "I would like to throw in three or a couple more words I feel are unique vernacular to KY:
  • Plumb: as in 'plumb crazy'

  • Yonder and Fur: as in 'a fur piece up the road'
CM Editor's note: Indeed, we hope Dr. Fudge realizes their worthiness. We would hope there is no confusement over the word fur and far, the latter as in 'a rick of far wood.' -EW

Great Wooded South Lexicon gets splendid contributions

Much in the spirit of Wikipedia, the inspiring scholarship of Dr. Billy Joe Fudge is eliciting interest from the Highest Levels. There will be those who are joobus, even some so mehainious they won't believe it even when it's writ on the internet, but this really is from Adair County historian Mike Watson, who draws on memories from a pantheon of Earl's Ridge and beyond greats
Comments re article 43588 Wordsmithing Getting right word with exactly right nuance

By Mike Watson

The various articles of late on wordsmithing have been most enjoyable; bringing to mind the rich linguistic variations of our common central universe. Having been reared in the Inroad-Earls' Ridge-Walnut Grove region of Adair County, we were exposed to the colorful verbal renderings of several patriarchs, including: Cleveland Lawhorn, Jim Earls, Dewey Turner, Oval Pettey, Bart Hadley, Gilbert Smith, Arvin Harvey, William Hadley, Bud Grider, Garvin Spoon, Rev. Noah Page, Piner Loy and Clarence Loy. I spent many a happy hour--perhaps too many--at Smith's Country Store listening to their tales of long ago.

Countian shocked by how Adair County living ages one

Comments steered up by Jones Street water line post mortem examination photo of a former Ononian as a Gildersleeve. With talking at random thoughts on perils of prettiest women poaching

A Russell Countian, an ex pat whose identify could not be revealed even if Terrell Wilson were still the Highest Court in the Land and ordered it done under penalty of an Ohio stay-away, wrote a comment on the picture in CM of Rudy Higginbotham, who has the appearance of a teenager to most normally aging people in Adair County.

The Countian says, "Lordy, that boy has aged 39 years since I laid eyes on him twoscore years ago."
