Poetry by Robert Stone. No Extremes, a sonnet

No extremes
-a birthday sonnet for John Keabler
The eye insisting on the distant views
will miss the pleasures of the near at hand
and often blinded by the rainbow hues
will grasp for bliss but grab the nearer bland.

The foot requiring well worn path to walk
will never know adventures just beyond
and always pacing chases set with chalk
will strain the bound but strengthen habit's bond.

The hand compelling petty showy touch
will lose the chance for joy in daily task
and ever offering too mean or much
will starve the mime but stuff unyielding mask.

Love does what must be done and does no more,
its unchanging choice and chosen chore.

- Robert Stone, 27 March 2011

A love of the seasons: It is a gift from her grandfather

By Sharon Whitehurst

My grandfather was McKenzie Lewis.

He was born 1886 in the Adirondack hamlet of West Hague, NY.

His father, William Lewis was born in upstate NY just after his family arrived from England in 1848. G-grandfather William Lewis headed west in his late teens to work on the Union Pacific RR and was present when the Gold Spike was driven in Promontory, UT, 10 May 1869.

Whitehurst Journal: Photo folders on PC serve as diaries

As an introduction to this essay, Sharon Whitehurst remembers that Monday was a red letter day for the Whitehursts in their new 'Promised Land' - Gradyville, KY: "March 21 marked the first year anniversary of our arrival in Kentucky from Wyoming--a harrowing three day run of snow, sleet and icy roads. Crossing the KY border and driving past green fields swathed in daffodils, finally lumbering in convoy into the dooryard of the Gradyville farm, we felt as though we had achieved the Promised Land," she wrote, and sends this essay about what she's finding this year: An earlier spring than 2010.

I grew up in a family for whom seasons and weather were vital matters of awareness and conversation. This is hardly unusual since country people have always been keen observers of weather as it affects seedtime, cultivation and harvest. As the season goes, wet, dry, cold or hot, so goes a local and personal economy for the dairyman or orchardist, or those who garden with the intent to "put up" a goodly supply of produce for the winter.

Jim: A Brief History of Early Cinema in Columbia, Ky., c. 1903 to late 1922

(Part 2 of 6) Feature Presentation (2nd reel): The Parlor Circle, a first-class picture show (Jan. 1912 - June 1915)

By "Jim"

One can only imagine the excitement and buzz around the Square when in January 1912, the News announced that Messrs. Ray Conover and George Montgomery planned to start a first-class picture show (or theatre, as it would now be called) in Columbia in the immediate future. In fact, those gentleman already had secured the hall above W.H. Wilson's store in the new Sinclair Building and Mr. Conover had "left Monday morning [January 22nd] for Cincinnati to purchase the outfit and to make all necessary arrangements."

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Solid Statues, Solid Lives - Part II

Another Angle, the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor. Solid Statues, Solid Lives - Part II First published 2 April 2006, in the Hart County News-Herald

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

Last week, at the close of Women's History Month, I wrote of two of the women who are memorialized at the U. S. Capitol in Statuary Hall, Esther Hobart Morris (Wyoming) and Dr. Florence Rena Sabin (Colorado). Over the years the 50 states have designated 101 people for remembrance with their statues. (The extra statue is from Kansas, which originally named as one of its choices the pioneer lawyer and governor George Washington Glick. In 2003 Kansas decided to replace the Glick statue with one portraying native son Dwight Eisenhower. Glick, like Elvis, has left the building; his marble likeness is back in Topeka.)<

Carol Perkins: The Needle

It was a freak accident: Half a needle lodged in her toe. Surgery in a critical area - a wrong cut could have left her crippled - was required, made all the more difficult because the surgeon was given the wrong X-ray. Read what could only happen to Carol Perkins, below.

Jon was only three days old when I was walking through the den and felt a sharp pain in my foot. I hobbled to the nearest chair, but could see only a pinhole where something had obviously penetrated, but I couldn't see a sign of what it might be. There was no splinter, so I obviously had stepped on something thin and straight. I feared what might be in my foot and didn't want to give voice to my suspicion.

Of Writers and Their Books No.R704: McKinney No. 1 - 400 barrels a day . First published in the Hart Co. News-Herald Sunday, 2 April 2006.
The next earlier column: Friday night at the strand

By Tom Chaney

Davis and Norris, oil drillers from Glasgow, brought in a gusher on September 18, 1930 in the vicinity of Legrand. This Louis McKinney well Number 1, when capped and pumped, produced oil at the rate of 400 barrels per day.

This was the beginning of the Legrand oil boom which was on the upswing as Willard Rouse Jillson published The Legrande Oil Pool a scant two months later. At the time of publication in November of 1930, Jillson, Kentucky State Geologist, listed thirty-nine oil wells, six gas wells in production and fifteen dry holes. Fifty wells were being drilled.

This will be of special interest to those who prepare their own income tax returns. I itemize deductions which increases the return preparation time and nervous apprehension over the "figure on the bottom line."
