Cathy Luttrell: Going bald to raise funds to fight kids' cancer

2011-03-26 - Powell Athletic Center, 203 Tiger Way, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by Jimmy Luttrell.
Adair Countian Cathy Luttrell, above, was a star shavee at the St. Baldrick's Day Event today at Powell Athletic Center on the campus of Campbellsville University. She agreed with fellow Adair County shavee Greg Bardin that it was an experience like no other. Bardin, a veteran shavee of the event, was accompanied by his grandson, Blane Bardin; the father and grandson sat side by side while their barbers gave them identical cuts.

Recommends a favorite site: Pandora.com for music

Linda Waggener writes:
I only recommend things I think are truly special - like Betty's OK Country Cookin whose great food and the owner's warm heart have kept me going many a day - so when I tell you I think you might want to open a new window on your computer and type in "Pandora.com" and sign in, you might just take it seriously.

After signing up you will be able to enter the name of a song, or the name of a singer or musician, and it will play that music and find others like it. When you get tired of that, just type in another and it starts up a new station for you, finding music like what you entered.

Part of what's great about around students is that they are always making new discoveries and sharing them. I have to thank a student named Andre Tomaz who found Pandora and told me what was making that wonderful music from his computer in the Communications office at CU last year. Since then I've enjoyed listening to music favorites and found many new ones. So I recommend it heartily. It's playing in the background now as I read ColumbiaMagazine.com - my first recommendation! -Linda Waggener

Big Al Owens is welcome to come to greatest ACHS reunion ever

Marian Grant send personal invitation to Big Al Owens to send in reservation and he can come to the Biggest Adair County High School Reunion ever - and to other ACHS graduates not from the seven class years (1981-1987)! Rationale for original selection of classes explained.

Marian Grant writes:
I am so sorry if anyone was left off any class list. I took the yearbooks I had and put together the lists from that. I would personally like to invite anyone I have left off to please join us and notify me at auntm@duo-county.com and I will definitely be sure your name is added. Please accept my apology as I am trying to include everyone who was listed in the yearbooks.

Also, I would like to explain why these classes were invited:

When we started talking about having this reunion we decided to invite the classes that our class (1984) went to school with which were the classes of 81-87. At this time if you would like to attend and weren't from those classes I am sure it would be fine for you to attend just send me a reservation form with your money by deadline and we would love to have you.

Again I am so sorry if I left anyone off the list it was not intentional, so I hope Big Al Owens will accept my apology. -Marian Grant

John E. Moss Rooster photo evokes memories of Sulphur Well, KY

Comments re photo 39688 Scenic Adair Co., KY: Forsythia and morning visitor

Linda Waggener writes:
The John E, Moss photo of the rooster and forsythia has gotten so many good comments that I just wanted to revisit it! That grand picture brought back my childhood in such a good way, recalling peeking out from behind my Grandma Alice Bell Royce Marcum's skirt as she carefully raided eggs from the hen's nests in the old chicken house behind the house in Sulphur Well, KY.

I hid because hens didn't like to being bothered during production.

I remember my Grandaddy Marcum would be in his hammock under the huge old Elm trees in the front yard with his hearing aid off so he wouldn't be bothered and roosters would be out eating bugs and stuff to get up enough energy to do what roosters do. Thanks, John, for sharing this wonderful photo. - Linda Waggener

Cathy Luttrell tells what it's like to be St. Baldrick's shavee

'The first thing I felt,' Cathy Luttrell said, after her head was shaved for St. Baldrick's event at Campbellsville University, today, to raise money to help find a cure for childhood cancer, 'was that the back of my head felt cold.' She said fellow Adair County shavee Greg Bardin, a veteran of the event in honor of his grandson, Blane Bardin, said that it feels like nothing you've ever done before. It was an unforgettable scene, seeing Blane there, with his granddad Greg, getting his head shaved, too, just like his dad. It was a good feeling, too, when Donna Wise, the event coordinator, told her she was the top woman fundraiser for the event -CM. PS: Donations are still welcome. She sends thanks to all her supporters who donated so generously.

By Cathy Luttrell

I would like to tell everyone what it was like to go to this event for the very first time. When Jimmy and I first arrived, we ran into Greg Bardin.

I believe this was his fourth or fifth year participating in this event. We walk into the Powell Athletic Center and just a small crowd has arrived.

The future has arrived. But where are the hover cars?

David Grigsby writes:
Wanted to drop a Hello, Columbia from the clouds. Im currently flying to California on a recruiting trip for the Lindsey Wilson Cycling team and my plane is WiFi connected. Seems Southwest is testing it out on a small scale on a few flights and mine is one of them. How spoiled we are to be getting internet connections practically everywhere we go these days, even 5+ miles above the earth traveling at 500 miles per hour.

I'm a relatively young man and even I remember the old Beverly Hillbillies episode where Jethro wanted a car phone, so he took a phone from the mansion and a spool of telephone cord that appeared to be several miles in length.

The future has arrived, yet Im still waiting on those hover-cars we were promised?

Sincerely,
Dave Grigsby, Lindsey Wilson College Cycling Coach

Big Al Owens says his feelings are hurt by the ACHS Mega-Reunionists

His group, the magnificent ACHS Class of 1988, overlooked. Big Al sends unveiled threat that he could pop up anywhere, anytime, however, as CEOs of major sports franchises could affirm.

Allen Owens writes:
Ed, I am very disappointed. It seems the class of 1986 has forgotten me. I realize that I am not around a lot, but I always thought I would be remembered. I have made reservations to stay at Lure Lodge for 2 nights but may need to reconsider now. Please advise whomever it may concern that Donnie Owens graduated from the class of 1986 and even though they have forgotten me, Big Al Owens, I have never forgotten where I come from, even though I may pop up anywhere. Thank-you. Big Al Owens
Me too. I totally understand your feelings. I too, graduated a year or so earlier, and my class, 1958, perhaps the greatest of all times, is excluded. I'll check with Ralph Roy. I think we're mad, too. -ED

Beshear uses line item veto in Medicaid/education dispute

Takes action on bill addressing Medicaid budget shortfall, vetoes Senate's proposed education cuts. Governor wins support of Education, health care groups. Note: Story below contains opinions from the Governor's writers.

By Kerri Richardson, Jill Midkiff
From Governor Steve Beshear's Communications office

FRANKFORT, KY. (2011-03-25) - Governor Steve Beshear today took action on House Bill 1 from the 2011 Special Session, resolving a shortfall in the Medicaid budget and preventing devastating cuts to health care providers. The resolution also ensures that federal money provided to, and in many cases already spent by, local school districts from the Education Jobs Fund will not have to be returned to the federal government.

The Governor line-item vetoed language in the budget bill that would have required cuts to Kentucky's schools, social workers, public safety, veterans programs and other critical services. In addition, in order to retain maximum flexibility in implementing other already required cuts for Fiscal Year 12, Gov. Beshear vetoed language that would limit his ability to ensure cuts are implemented in a way that causes the least amount of harm to Kentucky families.

Class lists, Mega Reunion drawing huge interest

Biggest Adair County High School Reunion Ever! Seven Classes!
Mega ACHS reunion 1981-1987 at Lure Lodge, June 3-5, 2011.
Click to Printable Online registration form. Deadline for Registrations, April 23, 2011.
Class Lists : Click on year for all the members of the Class of 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987. Find an error, omission? Call Marian Cole Grant (270) 378-1782.

The Mega Adair County High School Reunion is drawing huge interest and readership. Already, registrations are being received for the event, at Lure Lodge on Lake Cumberland June 3-5, 2011.

The seven lists of over 1,000 names, Adair County High School 1981-87 - have been among the most thoroughly read articles. The lists were meticulously proof read, but, with so many names, a few were left out and corrections are being requested. At CM, we asking that for changes on these lists, calls only be made to Marian Cole Grant at (270) 378-1782. She will check the records, confirm the accuracy of the request, and then direct CM to make the changes.

It's only now that the scope of the huge reunion is being realized. With the 1,000 graduates, their spouses, and children considered, the potential attendance could exceed the population of Columbia. Reality says it might be more like Columbia of the 1940's when there were 1,300 + a few on the population sign which stood at the city limits at the north edge of Franklin Nissan, but looks like the largest gathering of Adair County High School graduates, ever.

If you have special photos or memories from those seven years, those can be sent to Marian Grant or directly to ColumbiaMagazine.com for posting. Registration is easier than ever this year. There's a printable registration form, with contact information for Lure Lodge reservations, at Printable Reservation, ACHS 1981-1982-1983-1984-1985-1986-and 1987 Reunion
