Apple Dumplin Restaurant, Chambers, AZ: John Wayne country

2011-03-20 - Chambers, AZ - Photo by Paul J. Hughes.
"Apple Dumplin Restaurant," writes Paul J. Hughes, "featured all sorts of memorabilia on the walls including John Wayne's burial bill from the funeral home a few miles up the road. Seems that Mr. Wayne had a ranch in the same county. I was amazed to also see a Singer sewing machine just like my mom had in Louisville with the wooden box it was housed in." But John Wayne was not the Big Celebrity connection Mr. Hughes found. That discovery would have had to have been that there really is a town named Alanreed, Texas.

I can't rightly speak for idiomatic usage in Adair County, seeing as how I misspent most of my youth over in the hallowed hills of the Kingdom of Russell County, then left that place under cover of darkness many a moon ago.

Paul (Hughes) epistle to Alan Reed from Alanreed, Texas

Just 1,000 or so miles from Columbia, KY, the home of the real Alan Reed, writer Paul J. Hughes, CEO of Hughes Media in Nashvillle, TN and of good Gradyville, KY Hughes ancestry, discovered Alanreed, TX, and wrote the following to his good friend of the same name in Columbia, KY: Alan Reed, educator, Green River fresh water biologist, scientist, educator, literary critic, GEO tracker owner, reformed radio man, and frequent contributor to ColumbiaMagazine.com. in his role as literary critic Alan Reed - the man, not the town, - correctly critiques this piece as a great chapter for a great road book, evocative of works of Steinbeck, Least Heat Moon, and Keroauc, with a bit of Duncan Hines thrown in for good measure

By Paul J. Hughes

I was screaming across the continent after visiting several ArizonaIndian reservations and Canyon de Chelly (pronounced "de Shay"). I was in an early morning fog, sippin' my coffee when I checked my messages on my old beat up Sprint phone. Speaking of that, Lil' Red, our waitress in a place near the Interstate commented that she was a relic but she'd never seen a phone quite like the likes of what I was using. Lil' Red was dying to get to Nashville when my friend Skip Dillon told her we were from Music City, USA. She said that her son built beautiful hand-made guitars and he really should visit the Grand Ole Opry. "Yep, I said. "You should get over there."

Poetry by Robert Stone: When all was sure - a sonnet

When all was sure
a sonnet for my foot, about aging, by Robert Stone
My foot when younger merely went its ways,
not much concerned with possibilities,
and daily trips and stumbles did not faze
its confidence to do what so it please.

To take the stairs by skipping each odd rung
was such a simple sort of taking flight
and minor jars that body joinings sprung
were all ignored when gazing from the height.

To hold the railing now is wisdom's choice
and feeling every foothold till secure
is constant song of aging's vexing voice
that drowns the youthful tunes when all was sure.

Now older, foot, your messages are faint
and your responses mingled with complaint.

- Robert Stone, 20 March 2011

Columbia Post No. 6097 organized 65 years ago

The late Jack Williams was the first commander of VFW Post 6097. Literary groups and the Sallie Fields house, later the library, was in the news; Clarence Marshall had returned as School Superintendent, and the Columbia High School play, 'Strawberry Kate,' were all in the News just 65 years ago.

By "Jim"

The organizational meeting of Post No. 6097 was held 65 years ago yesterday - March 13, 1946. The charter, requested by fifteen veterans of Columbia and vicinity, had been granted by the national headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. A national post extension officer was present to preside at the meeting until officers were elected and the post named. The national officer also discussed in detail pending legislation H.R. 127, the Adjusted Pay Bill for veterans, sometimes referred to as the cash bonus bill.

In the United States Capitol Building, just off the great rotunda, is a large and impressive room that served as the chamber of the House of Representatives from 1807 until 1857. When the present House wing was completed, the representatives and their desks moved there, and the old hall became a cavernous and empty space. In 1864 Congress voted to designate this grand room as National Statuary Hall.

Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 140. Life before Tv?

Many of you readers may not know that people my age never saw a television show until they were thirty years old. I was a grown man, graduated from college, spent forty-two months in the military, had traveled extensively in the world, was married, had a home, and was awaiting a family, all before I owned a TV set.

Sharon Whitehurst: Seen in the Stars in Cumberland Co., KY

When husband Jim took her on wheeling/dealing trip to the Garrett Creek Road area of Cumberland County, she remembered she was in the general area of Subtle, Metcalfe Co., KY. She found, as all visitors to Cumberland County do, some very interesting folk architecture, including decorative stars, which may have inspired the current fad of putting metal stars on structures, she thinks.

Great Wooded South: Bears, other predators presence raises ante

By Tom Chaney

I must make an honest confession. I like westerns. There! I've said it. I like western novels. I loved western movies when they played at the Strand Theater every Friday and Saturday back in the 1940's.

Our grandmother took us to the Strand every Friday night. Grandfather would never go. Westerns were too childish for him. He would not have been surprised to learn that the good guys always wore white hats - the bad ones black.
