Kentucky jobless rate increases to 10.4 percent in January 2011

But there are bright spots: Trade, transportation, and utilities sector; education and health; professional and business services; and construction industry among those adding jobs

Martha Berry: More on stores on the Square sequences

Martha Berry writes:
Ed, in reading some of the letters on the White Cash Market, I stand to be corrected. Lynwood Gore was probably the owner then. At the time I am thinking of, Pete (R.R. "Pete" Walker) wasn't old enough to own anything but a gift of gab.

Herb Taylor owned the fine Men's Shop two storefronts down towards the Burkesville Street corner. Between the Men's Shop and the White Cash Market was Miss Hattie Lee's (Hattie Lee Willis) Dress Shop.

It HAS been a long time but I think I have the sequence correct. Then there was the incomparable Brown's Drug Store where many a teenager spent every afternoon; it was there the finest pimiento cheese sandwiches ever made were sold. How that store survived is beyond me, since all that the kids ever bought was a bag of potato chips and a coke with their quarter, while hanging out every afternoon, all afternoon, after school. Ahh, such fond memories of a much simpler time. -Martha Berry
This sounds good to me. But everything has to be run past "Jim" and Mike Watson for absolute corroboration. Maybe they will comment, or bless with silent acquiescence. -EW

ACHS Cheerleaders thank you: CANAM 2011 kickoff success

$1,119.53 raised for former cheerleader mom battling cancer

Coach Julie McQueary writes:
On behalf of the ACHS Cheerleaders, parents and coaches I would like to thank everyone who came out to the high school last night for our CANAM Kickoff. Also thank you to the Adair Co. Middle School, the Tumble Towne Divas and our fans for performing.

Last night after all the performances we told the crowd about a former cheerleader whose mother is battling cancer and some of the struggles they were having. We ask for anyone that could to make a donation as they were leaving. We hoped to make a few hundred dollars. What we ended up with was $1119.53. We were so excited. It's just amazing how wonderful of a community we live in. Thank you so much to everyone for supporting this cause. Adair County always comes through in times of need.

ACHS Cheerleaders will leave tonight for Nationals. Thank you to everyone who made this trip a reality. I feel very blessed to be a part of such a wonderful sports program and community.

Thank you, -Julie McQueary, coach, Adair County High School Cheerleaders
