Mr. Watson planned trip to inspect mystery sign

Mike Watson was to have made personal trip to Columbia today to ascertain the answer to the controversy instigated by Tommy Hardison, motorcycle tourist from Gradyville, KY, about what the letters showing through on the Russell & Co. Building are. Here's his letter, with apologies for the late posting. "Jim" has already sent a contrite letter for suggesting a longer name than looks possible, but, out of respect for his long, unbroken skein of no mistakes, he has been given a pass on the letter and it shan't be published nor counted against him. -CM
Comments re article 43007 JIM suggests another mystery sign interpretationMike Watson writes:
Well, Ed and Brother Jim...

I have contemplated, pondered, studied and stewed over photograph and have come to one conclusion: it appears to be too short for "Cash Only Dept Store", but must contain some wording or flourish to fill space if 'only' isn't present..

I have spent the better part of today digging through my far-too-disheveled files on Columbia businesses and institutions and have found nothing to help with this puzzle. Lerman Brothers' Department Store occupied the building from 1932 until closing business in January of 1988. Previously it had been in the Miller Hotel building, where the Post Office had been, from establishment in 1929 or 1930..

Between the time Mr. Russell had the big brick constructed and 1932, I find few references to occupants. White Cash Market came along after 1932, so I doubt this sign had anything to do with it. As I recall, Lerman's had their sign along this point on the building, black with white lettering and perhaps a border of white..

This bears further research....I'll get on it. I will be in town on Tuesday (this would have been today, March 15, 2011. We'll be awaiting the findings. -CM) and intend to do an eye-ball inspection!.

-MW
Your findings are anxiously awaited. -EW

Billy Joe Fudge: March in Kentucky limerick

March in Kentucky limerick

March in Kentucky is quite a trip,
Clippers or sunshine gone in a zip.

50 years ago a nail keg was the seat of learning

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
The ongoing discussion of the difficulty that the "drop downs" are having picking up the local dialect is tolerable interesting. Fifty years ago they could have found a nail keg at a country store and just listened for a spell. Dave Rosenbaum

Talking Adair Countian; Ever have - The Big Eye?

Wendy Butler Burt writes:
One favorite local expression, learned years ago from the late Pearl Gadberry in Fairplay, concerns those occasional maddeningly sleepless nights. When you lie wide awake in the dark, hour after hour, you have "the big eye" -- as in, "I had the Big Eye last night." -Wendy Butler Burt

Victoria Pike offers ways to thwart telephone scammers

By Victoria Pike

Do not answer calls that have a number such as 502-000-????.

These callers claim to offer a lower rate on your credit card but don't specify what card.

This is a way of seeing if this is a real phone number they are calling.

Columbia Baptist Church thinks lower price was right thing to do

Price concession because property will continue to benefit the community

Doug McCammish writes:
The members of Columbia Baptist Church felt that as long as the Columbia Christian Life property would continue to be available to the public as a city/county park and senior citizens center, the reduced price was the right thing to do. A commercial property price for the land would have been much higher and the official appraisal at the time of bypass construction was much higher. We are excited to see a public park become a reality for Columbia and Adair County. - Doug McCammish

Wonders if Adair County is doing anything to aid Japan?

There are at least two with ties to Adair County in the earthquake stricken country
If anyone knows of an Adair County effort to aid Japan, or of others from here in Japan, the information is welcome. Use any Contact-Submit button to share information. -CM

By Regina Key

I was just wondering if Adair County is doing anything to assist Japan?

I know of at least two people in Japan who have ties to Columbia.

Amy Anderson is from Adair county. She is the daughter of Vickie Anderson and is an exchange student.

Angie Gossett Petty is the daughter of R.T. and Wanda Gossett and the granddaughter of the late Mary and Van Gossett. Angie and her husband have been in Japan teaching English.

If we could reach out to give a hand up to Japan, we'd also be helping our own, too. -Regina Key

The old library: It was old and drafty, but it had character

A Legacy of Service begun in the old library on Burkesville Street is carried on today in the Adair County Public Library located on Greensburg Street

By LaVerne Jessee writes:
I've enjoyed reading the comments about the old library on Burkesville Street. I began my career there in 1963 with the Kentucky Department for Libraries, Lake Cumberland Regional Office, which was housed there. The building was an old, drafty brick structure, very cold in the winter; but had so much character, with squeaky old wooden floors and a swing on the front porch.

At that time Mrs. Mary Cravens was the County Librarian, and also the Bookmobile Librarian, with her husband driving the bookmobile for her. Besides myself, working in the Regional Library were Bob Allender, Mrs. V.P. Henry, and Randy Flowers. Thus, in this old house, a legacy of great library service for the citizens of Adair County was formed, and continues on today in the Adair County Public Library located on Greensburg Street. -LaVerne Jessee

Martha Berry: White Cash Market addendum

Martha Berry writes:
Ed, I was in Columbia yesterday and drove around the square to be sure of the location of the White Cash Market. It was next door to the purple store, in the Cafe on the Square building. I must have left home by the time it moved to Burkesville Street, but I remember being in the Library in the old brick house while Mother was librarian there.

As an aside, she couldn't have the job of "librarian" because, even though she had her education in Library Science, she never got a degree in the subject, hence the arrival of Bob Allender. And she ran the library for several years before Bob came, until a "librarian" could be found. She never saw the new library. By the time it opened she was too ill to go out. I offered to take her one day and she declined. Martha Berry

Floyd, I never met you, but in talking to Sharon, I was very convinced that she thought the world and all of you. Jason, you and your brother were very little the last time I saw you and I never met Julie, but your Mom was a great person and I loved her very much. Linda, I am sorry for the loss of your sister. Adair Countian well grounded in archaic language

"I don't care to do that."

That is a new one for me, but it does remind me of a similar one that I heard often at my mother's table that could be related.

I, too, went to the library on Burkesville Street in an old house. and I remember the White Cash being next door. Uses: I reckon - and reckons he will continue to do so

Clark County isn't so far from Columbia, after all, in matters of speech

Doug McCammish writes:
As most everyone knows, I'm from off (clear up to Winchester, KY). I am adapting slowly, BUT ... I distinctly remember my grandmother (who grew up in Ohio and raised her family in northern Kentucky) calling a visitor's attention to my use of "I reckon." I have not stopped using that phrase, but I have yet to adopt "I don't care to do that."
