Billy Joe Fudge: Kereifido Limerick

Kereifido Limerick
by Billy Joe Fudge
"Don't kereifido" can mean ok,
It's the local colloquial way.
For it rolls off the tongue
Without weighing a ton
While saying what you'd like it to say.
Billy Joe Fudge, March 14, 2011

Birds of Kentucky: Wittering turkeys draw nigh

2011-03-14 - Old Gradyville RD., Gradyville, KY - Photo by Sharon Whitehurst.
Sharon Whitehurst writes: "I've heard the voices of wild turkeys wittering from close by lately, but today was the first sighting. Five of them processed around the corner of the front porch and strode down the driveway. By the time I reached the porch with my camera the turkeys had reached the edge of Old Gradyville Road and with necks outstretched and long legs pumping, they took cover in the tall grass along Big Creek."

Remembers going to library on Burkesville Street

Valerie Barnett writes:
I don't remember the White Cash Market, but I do remember going to the Library when it was located on Burkesville Street. I would walk there from my grandmother's (Mollie Burris) who lived a few blocks from the Square. I loved going from room-to-room looking for books to check-out, then going back to "Granny's" to read. - Valerie Barnett

Phrase means: I don't mind to do that, historian says

Mike Watson writes:
This is a familiar phrase to me. We always interpreted it as, "I don't mind to..."

It isn't pecular to our area. For many years I taught with a lady who enjoyed telling about her first classroom experiences in far eastern Kentucky. One smacks of the phrase in question...

Upon arriving at the out-of-the-way school, the teacher asked one of a group of boys nearby if he would please carry a box from her car to the classroom. His reply was, "I wouldn't care to." She took this to mean he did not wish to, so she asked another student and received the same response. Later, she concluded his meaning to be "I don't mind to..." -Mike Watson

It seems that everyone has an opinion about the Sportsmans Club, some positive and some negative. I have been a member of the Sportsmans Club for over 30 years years and on the Board of Directors or an officer for the past 15 years or so. I got involved in the management of the organization when my children were small and I wanted them to learn gun safety and good sportsmanship afield. The organization has never let me down.

Mike Watson: Library was in the Miss Sallie Field House

The Columbia Library on Burkesville Street in house purchased by Dr. Samuel B. Field and had been the residence of a noted Columbia artist, Miss Sallie Field, who had studied art under the famed Zantippe Saunders in Louisville, KY
Comments re article 43008 Agrees with Marsha Walker memory of White Cash. Letter from Pat Sexton Goodwin.

By Mike Watson, Adair Co. Historian

When the Columbia Library moved from the Courthouse in the 1950s, it was located on Burkesville Street in the home commonly known as the Miss Sallie Field House. This old brick was purchased at an early date by her father, Dr. Samuel B. Field, and the second story added. He died in 1872, so the conversion was likely in the late 1860s. Miss Sallie lived on there until her death.

Martha Berry made yearly treks from Ohio to preserve accent

Shares enlightenment on White Cash Market, Roy Owen, and Joe Allison's photography shop, as well as a succinct interpretation of "I don't care to do that."

Martha Berry writes:
In our local speech - "I don't care to do that" only means that they will be glad to do that. "I don't care" means that they are agreeable to whatever is asked of them. I love our local nuances and dialect and missed all of that when I lived in Northern Ohio. I would come home every summer for 2 weeks to be sure that I kept my accent and not succumb to the northern Ohio speech.

In my memory (and I am a little older than Marsha) White Cash Market was in the corner of the square where the purple cafe is now. Roy Owen was the owner and I spent many Saturday hours there waiting for it to close so my boyfriend and I could go on about our Saturday night business. He worked there on Saturdays. And at that time, Joe Allison's photography shop was in the same building. -Martha Berry
The writer, Martha Berry, is part of the Adair County diaspora displaced in far-way Campbellsville, KY.

Ben Breeding examines: I don't care to do that

Comments re article 43005 Talking Right Mysterious phrases in Adair Co KY speechBen Breeding writes:
Ed, I don't know if this is proper, but in southwest Adair Co., "I don't care to do that" would mean the person does not want to do "that". This is similar to responding that you "would not care for any" to an invitation for a food dish, which means you do not want any of it.

It can be very confusing. I can recall my older brother saying "he would not care for any cabbage" then filling his plate with it. The family was mortified.

s/Ben Breeding
Thanks for the insight on the regional nuances within the Supreme Shire of the term, "I don't care to do that," which, since the charged controversey steered up by the incomer George Kolbenschlag, who is beginning to settle in after 20 years. This Kolbenschlag has caused sleepless night for lots of Adair Countians since he put the matter on the table, knowing full well it would be a lightning rod for debate.

Agrees with Marsha Walker memory of White Cash

Comments re article 43001 Remembers a White Cash Market

Pat Sexton Goodwin writes:
I agree with Marsha, I remember shopping at the White Cash Market on Burkesville Street with my Mother. I also remember going to the Library which was also located on Burkesville Street in an old house. Am I remembering the Library correctly? Does anyone else remember a Library in that location? - Pat Sexton Goodwin
You and Marsha are remembering correctly that the White Cash Market was last operated on Burkesville Street. And you're remembering correctly about the wonderful library downtown, operated from a converted residence, and stood at the corner of West Fortune Street and Burkesville Street. The First and Farmers Drive In Branch Bank is located there, today. -EW
