100 years ago: front page odds & ends Columbia was in a state of revival, with three meetings concurrently going on, simultaneously, at the same time. And, as usual, Jim notes, 'much good work' was being done, and, presumably, in other endeavors, 'good times were had by all,' as today, 100 years later, and as shall ever be. By "Jim" How scarce was "big" news in the March 15, 1911 News, you ask? Well, information about a corn growing contest and the participants thereof took up the better part of a front page column. (A clew, Watson, a clew!) There were, however, any number of short items of interest to the informed Adair Countian. Jo Russell (nephew of Mr. J.O. Russell) had sold his stock of goods to Ballard & Miller, and the latter gentlemen were already in charge of the stand. A.H. Ballard was an educator, entrepreneur, and part-time electrician; Mr. Miller was his brother-in-law. Beneficiary of work is thankful for Sugarfoot Farms Rescue Suggestions donations are very appropriate to help Peg Schaeffer carry out work Sandi Wills writes: This is in response to a "search" ad listed on 3/13/2011, about a lost dog from Sugarfoot Farm Rescue. This ad was about a "surrendered" dog that jumped the fence at Sugarfoot Farm Rescue. I sincerely hope that the people of Adair County recognize the wonderful, "free" service performed daily by Peg Schaeffer. Animals are constantly surrendered, dropped off, or rescued by Peg. These animals may stay 1 day or a week at the Rescue, but they have to eat, no matter how long they stay. If your dog was rescued and returned to you, please remember that they were well treated and fed for those days, and donate to the Rescue. - Sandi WillsFor those who want to follow Sandi Wills suggestion, and donate to Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, here's contact information: Peg Schaeffer, Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, Inc.,860 Sparksville Road, Columbia, KY 42728. Considering correct response to: I don't care to do that Comments re article 42969 Local speech: What does I don't care to do that meanSharon Whitehurst writes: My admittedly limited experience with that phrase suggests that the person doesn't mind doing something for me. It does end up sounding a bit short of positive - maybe a reluctant/polite offer? Is there an etiquette involved here that demands a particular response? "Thank you for offering"--or maybe, "I wouldn't want you to go to any trouble." We in-comers need to know these finer points of behavior! -Sharon WhitehurstThanks.: This question is on a finer point than CM can answer. However, it does evoke a suggestion: While Columbia/Adair County has no formal Newcomers Club, it does have organizations in which Incomers predominate. CM Classifieds: 1) Up 2) Immediate Results - 3) and Down again Those Free (or dirt cheap) advertising wonders The hardest job at CM is keeping Classifieds posted. They go up, get results, and are delete again, often within minutes or hours, as with ad No. 6924: Peg Schaeffer writes: Ed, this dog had been adopted from us and the owner called on Monday to say she had lost him. I had her call the number on the ad and they were reunited. It's amazing how many people read Columbia Magazine and the results it provides. Thanks so much,Peg Schaeffer, Sugar Creek Farm Rescue, Sparksville, KYThe ad for a little lost pug had been posted by Stephanie Caldwell, who is also doing so much to make Adair County an even more special place, as is Peg Schaeffer. We're not complaining, there's no part of the website we love better than posting the ads - especially when Happy Endings are shared with our readers, as Stephanie Caldwell and Peg Schaeffer have done. Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Forty can be a very good number Another Angle, the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor. Forty can be a very good number. First published 5 March 2006, in the Hart County News-Herald The next earlier Another AngleA life, a centenary, and some real sacrifice By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh As many people prepare to turn 40 they approach that birthday with dread. Now at the threshold of middle age, they fear that friends will send them dead roses or black balloons. They fear being thought of as "old." Legendary comedian Jack Benny held back the calendar by claiming famously throughout his comedy career on radio and television that he was 39. Born in 1894, Benny died in 1974, still claiming to be 39. In the realm of human vanity, 40 is a dreaded number.
