Inquiry: What do they do in a Senior Citizens Center?

M.E. Lewis writes: I read where they want to use part of the Christian Life Center for a Senior Citizen Center when it is purchased by the city and county. What do they do in a Senior Citizen Center? Is it for entertainment, education, bingo, shuffle board. Will it be smoke free? Enquiring minds want to know. M.E. Lewis Thanks. I wish I could answer your question. Maybe someone who is informed will let us know. -EW

Local speech. What does I don't care to do that? mean

George Kolbenschlag writes:
Ed: Your comments on Sharon Whitehurst's Gradyville article on Gradyvillian is a masterpiece. I learned much reading that and will feel much more comfortable on my trips to Gradyville now. However, I don't like to go out there too much as I don't want a nickname. A Fromoffer, I have been here over 20 years and still don't know what "I don't care to do that" means. Does it mean, "I don't care, I'll do that," or "I don't want to do it?" So when someone tells me "I don't care to do that" I just say, "OK" and wait a few days to see wether it gets done or not." That seems to work fine unless I'm asking for help putting out a fire. - George Kolbenschlag
Thanks for you kind comments. A very interesting question you pose about I don't care to do that.

Little Cake School used to be in another place

When Green River Lake was created, Little Cake School was moved

William L. Hardwick writes:
The place where the school is sitting now was not the original place. When they put the Dam in it had to be moved down the road by Uncle Lawrence's place. It used to sit beside the creek. My Dad went to school there. My Grandpa Oren Guinn Hardwick was living in it when they moved it. He had converted it into two rooms, When I was in the 5th grade we lived with them in it for a while. I went to a two room school house called Shepard. What memories. - William L. Hardwick

Incoming Vermonter wants advice on speaking Gradyvillian

Comments re article 42883. A bait vs a mess. Geographical nuances of meaning

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
I've been pondering the nuances of proper Kentucky speech since this article was aired. Now, today, with Jim bringing in a colander heaped with over-wintered kale, I wonder anew: did we have a "bait of greens", a "mess of greens"- or just a really tasty addition to our supper?I'm sure I'd trip over myself if I was so audacious as to imitate the speech of those who are "from here "- but I wouldn't mind a bit of coaching in the correct way to think of these things. Does Gradyville have some fine points of local terminology? - Sharon Whitehurst
What an utterly charming notion: To move to Gradyville and try to adopt proper English as it is correctly mumbled in Gradyville and, indeed, in all of Adair County.
