Columbia, KY- The voice of the new men's area coordinator at Lindsey Wilson College should be recognizable to most people familiar with LWC, even if they have not met him before.

If you have attended an LWC basketball game in Biggers Sports over the last three years, chances are you heard Jordan Willis' voice echoing over the public-address system.

Willis recently added a new title to his resume as he was named LWC men's area coordinator. As men's area coordinator, Willis is responsible for the more than 500 male residential students who live in LWC campus housing. He oversees Richardson Hall, Harold J. Application deadline for 4-H camp extended

By Tony Rose, Extension Agent for Youth

The Adair County 4-H program is still taking applications for 4-H Summer camp on May 30-June 3, 2011. March 1 was the deadline but because of the bad weather the past couple months, we are extending the deadline. We will take applications until the camp fills up.

At this time one girls' cabin and one boys' cabin are full.

The second boys and girls cabin are starting to fill up.

Once these cabins fill up we will no longer accept applications. Due to the number of boys interested we were able to add a second boys cabin.

Applications can be picked up at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service, 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY. Applications were also passed out at all the local schools. Feel free to contact us at (270) 384-2317 if you have any questions.

A proposal: historic Theatre Row or Cinema Row

Designation would recognize and preserve importance of movie theatres in the history of Adair County

By "Jim"

Perhaps that part of the Square from the corner of Burkesville Street to the Columbian Theatre building and on down the alley should be given to the name "Theatre Row" or "Cinema Row,"

This section was home at some time or another to five of Columbia's six on-the-Square (and just-off-the-Square) movie houses, to-wit (in chronological order):
  1. The Parlor Circle (Columbia's first movie theater; opened in 1912 at what is now 130 Public Square.)
  2. The Columbia Amusement Company (operated for about six months in 1916 and early 1917 in the W.L. Walker Building, which was consumed in the great conflagration on the Square in 1921.)
  3. Tutt's Hall (opened 1922)
  4. The Rialto (opened ??)
  5. The Columbian (opened 1947)
  6. (The location of the other on-the-Square theatre, the Paramount, remains unknown. It opened in 1916 as the direct successor of the Parlor Circle.)

Commends Adair County-Bonner recycling partnership

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
I am very pleased that the students at LWC are enabled with the recycling containers and hopefully perhaps encouraged to recycle items that otherwise go in landfill. Recycling keeps items out of limited landfill space and saves energy and water when producing new products from recycled items rather than making new products from raw materials, a more costly production.

LWC and local government show a very positive move that highlights awareness for the environment.

How about someone getting recycling containers for Walmart.? I see soft drink machines but nowhere to put the empties. Wal-Mart does have a container for plastic bags. hope people recycle those, too. - Vonnie Kolbenschlag

Internet mapping problem causes major problems on Garrett ST

Shellie Elmore writes:
We live at the end of Garrett Street, and the traffic is unbelievable! We moved here thinking that it would be safer for children to play because it is a dead end street. There is a constant turn around in our drive and our son is not allowed to be in the front yard or ride his bike in our driveway unless we are outside. When there are activities at the school at night and we are outside, we average giving directions to 5-7 people who are lost because of Internet mapping issues. Hats off to Judge Melton, Mayor Harris, Adair County 911, and anyone else who is willing to help make our children safe and our neighborhoods more peaceful! -Shellie Elmore
