Seeing Anne Frank house made him appreciate America more Wally Burress writes: For anyone who hasn't read this (The Diary of Anne Frank), it's a great book. The optimism this young girl had while living in such trying times was amazing! It's sad that she lost her life when she was so close to freedom. I saw the Frank house in Amsterdam, Holland during my first tour in Europe while in the army. Seeing things like the Frank house and getting pieces of the Berlin Wall on my second tour in 1989 made me realize more than ever how very lucky we are to be Americans!! Carol Perkins: Just One More Time Savoring past experiences is one of the delights of life. Remembering delicious moments, especially the ones more difficult to reclaim, led to this bucket list of One More Times, as could only be enumerated by Carol Perkins. The Next Earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: I'm walking the floor over you By Carol Perkins Just one more time. Have you thought about what you would like to do if you could do something just one more time? Just one more time: I would like to dance that old time rock 'n' roll without my knees giving way. (That means to weaken and cause one to fall.) In the fifties and early into the sixties, rock 'n' roll (bebop) was THE dance, but not everyone could do it. If a guy's rhythm borderlined slow, he might as well find a chair until the next slow dance, where all he had to do was sway from side to side and stay off a girl's toes. Foremost for the rock 'n' roll was being able to gyrate, and only a handful in my town mastered this dance. Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Anne Frank, a Legacy in Words Another Angle: The occasional musings of a Kentucky Pastor, originally appeared in the Hart County Herald on 5 June 2005; it is modified for 20 February 2011 by RHS, for this posting on ColumbiaMagazine.com on 27 February 2011 By Rev. Joey N. Welsh Sometimes we encounter words of wisdom from sources that seem unlikely to us. Margot Frank, born February 16, 1926, kept a diary that was lost. But a famous rescued diary was kept by her younger sister, Anne, born June 12, 1929, who died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in early 1945, six weeks before the camp was liberated by the Allies. Jim: 100 years ago for Sunday, February 27, 2011 Ripped from the front page of the News. The dastardity of some crimes plaguing Columbia a century ago seems somehow to still prevail. Then, and maybe now, things were kept in perspective. "The town Marshal's attention is called to riding bicycles upon the pavements of this town. There is an ordinance against it, and the law should be enforced. The skating stopped. The city council should see that its laws are obeyed." as the News courageously stated. There was, then, as now, a greater understanding for trivial matters, as when the News reported: As an evidence that Columbia is a quiet, law-abiding town, there has been but one serious difficulty in the corporate limits since the close of the civil war, forty-six years ago. The killing of Cy Watkins by Eli Bailey is the difficulty to which we refer, and that trouble was not brought about by the man who was forced to do the killing. All this plus the Six Alarm School Bell in this thrilling Episode of 100 Years Ago in Adair County! -CM By "Jim" The front page of the March 1, 1911 News was nothing short of a cornucopia of information and spicy bits. The meeting at the Baptist church wasn't to end until that night, but already, "the Church was greatly revived." The Christian Church, not to be outdone, announced a series of meetings to be held beginning the second Sunday of the month, led by "Eld. [John Lincoln] Brandt, a noted evangelist," with song service led by the minister's son-in-law and daughter. Sandhill Cranes: Bird enthusiast says hunting has positive impact Says cranes not eating frogs in Kentucky; when they are here, he says, frogs are in hibernation. Cranes are gleaners in corn stubble while visiting. It's the herons which can wipe our amphibians in small ponds. While he sees no need for a crane hunt to control their population, he says, I see no reason to begrudge hunters a few cranes (the harvest would be small, given the nature of the proposed season) as a way of saying "thank you". Article contains warning about ferocity, danger of wounded cranes By Derek Coomer The reader who noted that Sandhill Cranes have been devastating amphibian populations may be confusing cranes with the similar looking Great Blue Heron. Sandhill Cranes are only present in Kentucky while frogs are in hibernation, and feed mainly in corn stubble and not in water. Herons are in Kentucky year round and can wipe out the frogs in small ponds, but they have very little impact on overall amphibian populations when compared with pollution and habitat destruction. Barry Jones on: The Truth About Hunting in Kentucky Range of wildlife we have right in our backyards is due to the work of the Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Department, Barry Jones says. KFWD, in turn, is funded by the sale of hunting and fishing licenses. He says every wildlife lover owes it to buy a hunting and fishing license, whether they hunt or fish or not Written on reading: Comments re article 42697 The Truth About Hunting in Kentucky by Chris Bennett Commentary by Barry Jones Very well said, Chris. I have made similar statements in so far as to say my father never dreamed of seeing white tail deer in Adair County I was grown when I stumbled on my first wild turkey while squirrel hunting one fall afternoon. The thing scared me to death when it jumped and flew. I never knew my heart could fit in my throat but it did that day. And today, it is possible to hunt black bear, elk, see the American Bald Eagle, coyote hunt, bobcat hunt, duck hunt, and goose hunt all in our backyards.
