Joe Hare backs KY F & W management of wildlife

Writer says the management of hunted species has caused them to flourish so they are plentiful for the enjoyment of all. Notes how, thanks to Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Department, he and grandson saw the first otter in the wild he'd ever seen in his nearly 60 years, near Holmes Bend on Green River Lake
Comment on: The Truth About Hunting in Kentucky

Commentary by Joe Hare

I am a little older than Chris and I remember well when we had no deer, turkey, elk, geese, sandhill cranes and others. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Game have done a great job and we as sportsman, when we buy license, guns, ammo, and other equipment we pay for the restoration of all species, not just the one we try to harvest.

The Truth About Hunting in Kentucky

Adair County author and frequent CM contributor Chris Bennett recalls a sudden stopping of school bus, when he was a kid. The driver had spotted a rare creature in Adair County, a deer! Today, without hunters and predators to keep their numbers in check, deer can become unhealthy and major nuisances. He says the same has become so with the Sandhill Cranes. Their return has been thanks to the Kentucky Fish and WIldlife, which is responsible for the enjoyment of a greater abundance of wildlife today. He asks that all visit the Kentucky Fish & Wildlife website and study their reasoning for starting a Sandhill Crane hunting season.
Comments re article 42682: Believe it or not Kentucky is considering Sandhill Crane hunt

Commentary by Chris Bennett

Well, I am 35 years old and I have lived in Adair County Kentucky for all of my life. I have traveled to about 24 different states (some by boat), mainly for educational purposes (History & Research), or to hunt and fish. I hope to travel to all 50 states in my lifetime. I have also fished in the waters of Canada.

Says hunting season for cranes will give Kentucky blackeye

Ben Yandell writes:
You can Google Kentucky Coalition for Sandhill Cranes to find an organization trying to prevent this silly hunting season.

Our group welcomes both hunters and nonhunters as members.

Kentucky needs a sandhill crane hunting season like a hole in the head. Starting a season on these beautiful birds will give a blackeye to hunters and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. -Ben Yandell

Bird lover Eddie McQuaide say cranes devastating amphibians

Ed McQuaide writes:
Best wishes to all the lovers of the feathered friends.Let's don't be bird- brained about this issue of the hunt on the Sandhill cranes. These things have multiplied at an alarming rate and their numbers continue to create havoc on the natural enviroment.

I speak of many years of observations of the effects these birds have played in my life. These days they are found on most any waterway wading and plucking out every amphibious creature natural to Kentucky. They will eat all of the frogs on the pond before summer's start. If a study on these things were made public and the results of the impact on the dissapearance of the amphibians on the natural world made available, I don't think they would feel the same.

I mean no disrespect to anyone for their beliefs. Half of my living room was covered with bird portraits. If you feed them, you will only have fatter birds with more crap on your windshield. - Eddie McQuaide
