By Doug Beard
Guest commentary on music and theatre

Related to the approach of the Academy Awards this week, I have enjoyed the interesting stories on CM about the history of the Columbian Theatre. This facility has been an important part of the legacy of our Public Square for well over half a century.

Did Ralph Roy also own the Jolly Roger?

Comments re article 42582 Ralph Roy makes perfect sense to another leftyPhyllis Curry writes:
Ed, Do I recall correctly that Ralph Roy was also the driver of the Jolly Roger ice cream truck that used to come down Tutt Street when I was just a girl? The newspape reference brought back a lot of pleasant childhood memories for me. Perhaps one of you could tell the story of the Jolly Roger. Thanks! -Phyllis Curry
Phyllis, I believe you may be right. And didn't he also have the only Corvair, or the first one, in America? He was always ahead of his time. Though, for the "Jolly Rogers," he only had Columbia's second one. Leo Wheatley, had the first. Leo's legacy also includes the Lakeway Motel, whose successor buildings, owned by Mike Stephens, still stand at 705 Russell RD, Columbia, KY. -EW

About: Ralph R. Waggener: Being left handed

Charles Marshburn writes:

A lot of people say that. If you can find a copy - they're scarfed up so fast - send him a copy of Adair County's influential and widely read print publication, "It's Just for a Smile News." It's full of perfect sense and good humor. It has one of the biggest, perhaps the biggest, Adair county circulation.

Well behaved bees are welcome - in their place- during GBBC

Taking corn out of bird feed, increasing sunflower content, setting up bountiful bee buffet away from birds dining area, has given birds bee-free banquet area

Pam Dailey-McNeiley writes:
About the bees... on Friday, I donned a jacket, gloves and hat, and stood and watched what they were going for in the feed. They were rolling and trying to pick up the cracked corn, just like Mr. McCasland said. So I emptied the feeders with the corn mix on plywood scraps on the ground about 20 ft. away, added apple slices and a tray of sugar water for good measure. Then I replaced the feed in the bird feeders with a no corn mix and lots of sunflowers and the bees went to the ground sites. They are welcome to stay and eat (and I will put some more cracked corn out for them on the ground), but just not inside the feeders while I am trying to do a bird count! -Pam Dailey-McNeiley
