Bird Counting and spouses: Urgency created by Sandhill Cranes

The Perils of Counting the Birds

Pam Dailey-McNeiley writes:
I have had an ear tuned to listening for sandhill cranes since I counted over 60 last weekend in the air. At about 2 p.m. I heard their plaintive cries and went racing down the stairs to grab the binoculars, yelled to my husband,"I hear sandhills!" and slopped outside immediately in my slippers.

He had no idea what I was yelling about and running outside for and thought some tragedy had befallen. "What's goin' on?" he yelled back with concern.

It took awhile to explain that I was just counting birds; but hey, I made it to 82 sandhills before the flock was out of counting range! - Pam Dailey-McNeiley

Ralph R. Waggener: Being left handed

Or, 'How the Waggener Bros. and Rodney L. Thompson and Hunter Durham revolutionized the newspaper delivery bidness, right here in Columbia, KY'

By Ralph R. Waggener

One of God's chosen few.

That's the way I describe being a lefty. It has its good points and its bad as well. It's a scientific fact that all lefties are, well, just smarter, better looking, and much more talented in most cases.

Now because there are fewer of us, I know some of the not so talented right handers are going to argue their point. I guess they are just not educated enough to understand my point.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Wings, a sonnet

Wings
- a sonnet for doing today today's work
To leave and to return is work of wings
that nurture, oversee, and note our growth,
that lead the good and lure afar the slings,
that balance chances high and lesser both.

To stay nearby protecting wings will dare
the harm to self that fortune blind may bring,
the hidden threat that hunters set in snare,
the open choice that nature's pipers sing.

To soar at last post fledgling wings are spread
that seek the wider world new life to grow,
that strive to do the things on inner thread,
that stretch at last to meet death's final blow.

No chance will come to teach a second time
the needed guide to wing away and climb.

- Robert Stone, 20 February 2011

Adair Beekeeper offers advice on bees and birds

Maybe the answers will come out at next Green River Bee Keepers meeting at the Taylor Co. Extension Office, 1143 S. Columbia, AV, Campbellsville, KY, at 7pmET/6pmCT, March 15 2011

Shirley Jones writes:Ed, We feed the birds and also have honey bees. I noticed the bees on our bird feeders a few days ago also. I don't know how to keep them off unless maybe put some feed out close to the hives. We also feed the humming birds when they come back in the spring. I have found the way to keep the bees off the humming bird feeders is to put vaseline around the feeding holes. It doesn't seem to bother the humming bird, but the bees don't like it and will stay away. The Green River Bee Keepers meet the third Thursday of the month at 7pmET at the Taylor County Extension Office. Eveyone is welcome to come. Maybe some one will know how to solve the bird feeder problem. - Shirley Jones

Sycamore Springs: Did bees just wake up too early this spring?

Sage of Sycamore Springs finds herding bees no small challenge. Sugar water was insufficient bribe; bees still preferred Petals' pig chow and other livestock food, to that.
Comments re article 42564: Bees If they are problem call join or visit GR beekeepers

By Cynthia Meyer
From Sycamore Springs, KY

I too have been visited by bees of late. Seems the little busy bodies are attracted to corn and feeds. I was cleaning out the feed room, and noticed several bees, knowing they were honey bees, I did wonder if they woke up too early - so to speak - since there is nothing blooming.

I did mix up some sugar water, and set it on a barrel away from the feed room. This did not divert these sleeping beauty bees attention from the feed boxes. Matter of fact, not one bee visited my makeshift feed feast! I even sprinkled sweet feed near the nectar concoction, but the bees were steadfast, and faithful to the "smackerels" from the feed bins.

It was not only the molasses that may have been attracting them, as they seemed just as fond of the Calf Manna and Petals' pig chow. So maybe it had something to do with corn and it's calories? -Cindy Meyer

Bees? If they are problem, call, join, or visit GR beekeepers

Bees use the soy and corn dust in bird food for nutrition

John McCasland writes:
The honeybees are after the feed scraps. There are no trees blooming yet and they use the soy and corn dust for carbohydrates for nutrition to start raising the first brood of the season. Put some powdered feed someplace accessable to them and they should not be as much of a bother. They won't be swarming until late April or May and then there will be a large mass of bees (think basketball size) looking for a new home. That is the time to call a beekeeper to come and get them for you if need them moved. Better yet join (or visit) the Green River Beekeepers and learn about becoming a beekeeper yourself. They are fascinating little creatures and do so much for pollination as well as produce sweet treats. -John McCasland

Sixty-four years ago, Misses Hayworth & Doan came to town

The Opening of the Columbian TheatreA funny thing happened on my weekly trek to 1911 -- I pulled up lame 36 years short of my destination. However, it's might nigh impossible anything from a century ago could come close to the Grand Event of exactly threescore and four years ago, the day the stars came to town. -JIM

February 20, 1947:
The day Misses Hayworth & Doan came to town

Sixty-four years ago today ranks in the upper echelon of Columbia's red letter days. The lead sentence in an article found in the February 12, 1947 News sets the stage:

Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Marshall announce in this issue that the new Columbian Theatre, which has been under construction for many months, will be formally opened to the public on Thursday, February 20, 1947.

Counting the Birds today? Don't forget the thrills raptors provide

Bluejays and Cardinals are great to watch, but the lives of the great raptors of Adair County offer exciting life and death dramas every day. Many birders go to Green River Lake, Lake Cumberland, Dale Hollow or Barren River to observe them, but they can also be seen right in town and, very much along the roadways. They aren't too good to accept a fresh kill along the highway. Kestrels, owls, and particularly red-shouldered hawks are seen along the roadways waiting for the next easy meal, as those who travel Wheeler Hill on the old KY 61 know so well. Drivers along the Adair Veterans Memorial Parkway frequently see a variety of hawks swoop down, clutch, and carry away a rabbit, a favored meal. Above A truly great Birds of Kentucky moments was captured by John E. Moss, Jamestown, on 2011-02-09 in Russell Co., KY who sent it with this caption:Something Under The Snow: "Only this young Red-Shouldered Hawk has a idea of what is under the snow cover as it dives to the ground intent on obtaining a potential meal." PS: If anyone can send information falconry in Adair County, please do so -CM. PPS: Please remember how important sending your checklists to the Great Backyard Bird Count is on this, the third day. Hope you'll send your 1st check at daybreak and add more during the day! To submit your checklists (hopefully with sightings of raptors) in the Great Backyard Bird Count CLICK HERE
