Discovers new Adair Co. sights - Counting them birds!

New to them: The beautiful countryside around Cane Valley

Maury Lewis writes:
My husband and I went around Adair County today counting the birds. I couldn't take pictures. I was driving and he was writing and counting. He has really good sharp eyes.

Sometimes I could pull off the road to see better, but not close enough to take pictures.

We also saw some beautiful country we had not seen before around Cane Valley.

Here are some of the birds we saw:
3 Kestrels, 3 Redtail Hawks, 2 Rock Pigeons (in the Valley - not in town), 2 Turkey Vultures, 1 Kingfisher,1 Killdeer, 1 Eastern Meadowlark and a pair of Hooded Mergansers in a pond.
I can't wait till tomorrow to count around my house. -Maury Lewis
Thanks. It's always so much fun to find new roads in Adair County. I've driven the county exploring for new sights and I'm amazed at how frequently I have grand places, especially great vistas, I never knew existed. And yes, the bird count this year has been especially fun, with more and more people helping with their greater knowledge. -EW

Birds of Kentucky: Turkey vultures, splendid soarers

2011-02-19 - 1535 Bull Run RD, Columbia, KY - Photo by Barbara Armitage.
"These two Turkey Vultures," writes Barbara Armitage, "feel a bit like I do 'coming and going at the same time.' " The birds, so spellbinding in flight, seem to be on a decline this year, with their less likeable cousins, Black Vulures, becoming predominate in some areas - a fact noted by Billy Joe Fudge, lamented by Jon Halsey.

Hopes higher black/turkey vulture ratio is temporary

Jon Halsey, who lives in Northern Adair County, counted 70 Black Vultures roosting in woods behind house, with more in the air. He's seeing fewer turkey vultures, those majestic, beguiling fliers he much favors over the new invaders
Comments re article 42548 BJ Fudge notices iincrease in Black Vultures

By Jon Halsey

Up thru last Fall we had about 6 to 10 Turkey Vultures on a daily basis. The wife used to chide me for being beguiled while watching them soar majestically on the updrafts coming over the ridge.

Remembering Hughes Walker: Saddened also

Death of a childhood friend evokes a tribute and brings back memories of their families' childhoods on Burkesville ST, of Edith Walker's kindergarten school and staying with Billy and Sylvia Wilson afterwards, of the families' changes of residences, of the writer's first kindergarten teacher also being one of her first teachers at Lindsey Wilson College. She remembers Hughes - older than she - as an intelligent, kind, caring, well-mannered youngster who would reach adulthood and be so well prepared for his ultimate role helping veterans with their VA credentials
About:Russell Hughes Walker, Adair Co., KY (1946-2011)

By Prudence Hutchison Westholm

I also was saddened to hear of Hughes Walker's passing. I knew his family very well when we were neighbors on Burkesville St. in the 1950's.

Sugar, sugary drinks attract bees

M.E. Lewis writes:
I would try putting some sugar water away from the feeders. Maybe a humming bird feeder. I don't know what they are attracted to on a regular feeder.

Are there a lot of them like a swarm of bees? Does some one around you have bees?

If it is a swarm you need a bee person to come get them.

Bees are very attracted to canned drinks but they will go inside the can and drown.

I know that for a fact because they almost shut down a party I was having at my house on a beautiful fall day in Alabama. -M.E. Lewis

Dogs on KY 55/Campbellsville RD, Columbia, KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

We were driving down KY 55 N a little while ago and saw two dogs that I am sure their owners are missing. One was a boxer and one I am not sure what he is. but he had a camo bandana on. Both seemed friendly and were walking down 55 in front of Genesis Family Medical. We followed them behind the office so that we could get a picture of them.

B.J. Fudge notices increase in Black Vultures

Comments re article 42545 The Great Backyard Bird Count is the talk of the town

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I don't know about the rest of CM's readers but I seem to be seeing more Black Vultures and less Turkey Buzzards these days.

As to the observations the Wright Bros. might have made, I have always considered it ironic that the first flight, historically, occurred at Kitty Hawk. That first flight actually took place at Kill Devil Hills nearby Kitty Hawk, however.

There is no actual "Kitty Hawk" bird but most scholars believe the name came about from the local brogue pronunciation, "chickahawk".

The Great Backyard Bird Count is the talk of the town

In three stops, at the library, at the chiropractor's, and at the feed store, everyone was enthusiastic about Adair County's great February family fun pastime, counting the birds, learning about them, and being part of the biggest scientific study in the world, the GBBC

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

While running my errands on Friday afternoon I couldn't help but notice that everywhere I went the talk was about the Great Backyard Bird Count. First I stopped in at the Adair County Library where Leeann Jesse told me that a bird watcher had been in at 9am to enter their first bird count on the library computers and shortly after that a grandmother stopped by to pick up data sheets so that she and her grandchildren could count all weekend.

Complete the general information section first then when you enter your actual Count click on the bird name. This will take you to more information on this species including recordings of the bird's call.

Gradyville, KY is enjoying nocturnal serenade of Spring Peepers

'For the second evening in a row our bend of Big Creek has hosted the spring calls of the peepers'. - SHARON WHITEHURST. More signs of the changing season: Songs of mockingbirds fill the air. Sand Hill cranes are heard from flyways, high overhead.

By Sharon Whitehurst

Gradyville, KY. February 18, 2011 at 6pmCT - It was too lovely outside this evening to be indoors. There was no spectacularly colorful sunset, but the air was soft and almost misty.I tried several camera settings in an attempt to capture this hour of dusk which smells of awakened earth and a gentle shower.

We have heard sand hill cranes cronking as they circled high overhead. A mockingbird perched in the old apple tree has trilled a much sweeter song.
