Welsh Valentine's Day 2006 is now past. We have endured the jokes, the e-mails, the candy hearts, and the cards with corny and sentimental verse. Now, at long last, we can go on to other things, other poetry. One of my own very favorite poets is Emily Dickinson (1830-1886). I never have my one-volume book of her collected works very far away, and I find fresh insights in her words every time I read her poetry. 111 years ago, news was: skase, mighty skase Health care reform might have gone better if the the nation had realized how effective and cheap good health care was in Columbia in 1900, when the 'best cure for Pile' was 25 cents. -CM By "Jim" "The best laid schemes o' mice and men gang aft agley." These words, penned many a century ago by Bobbie Burns, the Scottish ploughboy and poor man's philosopher, still give bountiful measure when weighed on the scales of enduring truth. My intent (yes, yes; I know all about the sad conclusion of good intentions) was to do this week's column from the February 14, 1900 News as a nod to Ms. Lera Williams 111th birthday last week. (Ad) Classifieds are busy, busy, busy - in the background We don't mention classifieds on the front page of CM so much anymore. They are percolating so well on their own that they don't need much boosting. They continue to be extremely interesting reading, with some extraordinary opportunities, like this just posted: Strapless Dress for sale I have a black strapless dress for sale. Only been worn one time and is in great condition. It has a hot pink sash that ties around the waist. It was used for a summer wedding but could be used for prom as well. I paid $150 for it but will sell cheap. Contact Miranda at (270) 634-0925It does pay to check CM Classifieds often. Many are up and down so fast. Yesterday, Saturday, February 12, 2011, there was a post for firewood. In a short time, there was a follow-up. The advertiser said that within minutes, she had gotten calls, and the firewood was on its way, and to delete the ad. A little story played out in minutes in CM Classifieds. 2011-02-13 09:03:53 | Comments | Printable version

Modern New Columbia beckons busloads of NY, NY refugees 'Twould be one more C-AC Board of Trade triumph by Ed Waggener It is conceivable that poet Robert H. Stone's classic poem, The Modern New Columbia, written in the style of poet Emma Lazarus' The New Colossus, could inspire busloads of refugees from the repressive, police-state coffee houses of New York City. Some may already be able to envision the sight: The busloads of thinkers, philosophers, poets and stockbrokers met entering Columbia on the Martin Luther King Boulevard at Holladay Place with the Adair County High School Band playing the city's national anthem, "Columbia, the Gem of Kentucky," as a recorded reading of Robert H. Stone's The New Columbia is read to the arriving freed masses, protecting their Kindles, iPads and laptops from their tears of joy as the caravan makes it's way to the Southwest Corner of the Columbia Square and Freedom! Freedom! Freedom! Freedom to use all the open Wi-Fi at the Cafe on the Square their hearts desire. Freedom to loaf and drink coffee or not. Freedom to sit and talk and think and create and sell stocks and bonds and derivatives to their hearts content. Already, The New Columbia sonnet, written in the Italian 8-6 style rather than the 4-4-4-2 Shakespearean style, as every Adair Countian probably already knows, has drawn accolades from abroad. A reader in Los Angeles has already told Robert Stone that the poem is his best yet. In a way, the prospect is even more inspiring than seeing busloads of Canadian tourists coming to spend their money here. After all, who among us can distinguish between a Canadian and a New Yorker. They all look alike to us. The only way we can tell them apart is by their money. 2011-02-13 06:53:52 | Comments | Printable version
