More on where iPhone gets the weather

Comments re article 42409 iPhone weather comes from Yahoo Weather

Tami Wilson writes:
Hey, Ed. Funny how that post about the -9 temp got curiosity going. I had the day off and couldn't help but check out the source of the report. My iPhone weather app which looks looks exactly the same as the one pictured, gets its data from the AccuWeather.com associated with the "World Weather Authority".Yahoo weather has The Weather Channel logo on its website, so I'm guessing that must be their source. Not of much importance, but I too, notice that the reported temps for various weather reporting agencies often vary for any given time. Have a nice day, Tami WIlson
Thanks. We still sticking with Dr. Stuart Foster and the Columbia Mesonet station as the ultimate authority on temperatures in Adair Co. -EW

What a difference: Columbia, KY vs. NY, NY

The Modern Columbia
- sonnet in imitation of Emma Lazarus' The New Colossus celebrating the friendly atmosphere toward modern gadgets on the square in Columbia, Kentucky
Not like the brazen New York houses famed
With conquering coffee now in hand,
Here on our square, awash with thought does stand
A place where conversation daily flamed
By modern gadgets fancifully named
is lighting up our own beloved land
which glows a world-wide welcome to demand
Acceptance of the new computer framed

"So keep, commercial greed, your clutching key
To profit only. Give us yearning poor,
the disconnected masses seeking free
the entire world though on this inland shore
Send hungry for both food and thought to me,
I lift my cup in greeting at my door."

- Robert Stone, 12 February 2011
Mary Keltner sent a link to story in NY Times which fairly screams for a comparison between these two greatest American Cities.

Call to report on services which Bless the Birds

We'd love to have news of any Blessings of the Birds, or Prayers for the Birds in services in the area this last weekend before the 2011 GBBC.We thought the Methodists, who have a liturgy for almost everything would have a blessing for the birds, but didn't find it. We did find an interesting article, "St Francis Preaches to the Birds," at this link, Francis Stories.Send comments with "Blessing the Birds" in the subject line, using any Contact/Submit button. -CM.

JIM: Birds played role in early Adair Countians' lives

Enjoying the birds in Adair County is centuries old, as 'Jim' points out in this compilation of writings by the Adair County News correspondent, commenting on poetry by resident J.T. Jones. The correspondent wrote 'A somewhat rambling but mostly true birding report from north of the Green River' for the News in April 28, 1909. His mother fed the birds, and his family's trips were measured successful by the number of raptors seen. His lament was 'missing the mockers south of the Green.' His quiet, understated and modest humor seems to anticipate the coming Dr. W.K. Neat, when the 1909 News correspondent from N. of the Green writes, Adair Countyistically, The worms in particular thrived on the natural fertilizer Mama used to grow her flowers. I once saw one of those organically fed red wiggler's tar and defeather a robin. Somehow, hyperbole and bragging has just never seemed to be a part of our literary heritage. -EW

By "Jim"
Where have you been my bonny bird
To leave alone so long,
One whom you have so often cheered
With your enchanting song?
These words, penned by Adair County resident J.T. Jones, appeared in the April 28, 1909 edition of Adair County News. I know how Mr. Jones felt. We live in a rural area somewhat north of the Green River where wildlife abounds, but one species sadly missing is Mr. Jones' bonny mocking bird. So rare are they here that so much as a single sighting raises hope the next year will bring more. Alas, that has yet to come to pass.

Maury Lewis on love life of birds

Northern Cardinals exhibit similar lovebird behavior to that of American Goldfinches
Comments re photo 39173 Birds of Kentucky: Goldfinches: starring in A Kiss Before Dining

Maury Lewis writes:
I noticed this activity at my platform feeder the other day where the Goldfinches looked like they were kissing.

I do know and have seen male Cardinal's feeding the female Cardinal during mating season, but I don't know if there are other birds that do this.Maybe someone out there could tell us. -Maury Lewis
Thanks, Maury Lewis. Maybe someone will submit a photo of male Cardinals feeding females. Wouldn't that be nice for Valentine's Day and/or the 2011 GBBC? -CM
