We received a reminder of Russell Co., KY Medal of Honor Speaking of those who earned the Medal of Honor, did you ever hear of this fellow who was awarded same in World War II? SPURRIER, JUNIOR J. Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company G, 134th Infantry, 35th Infantry Division. Place and dare: Achain, France, 13 November 1944. Entered service at: Riggs, Ky. Birth: Russell County, Ky. G.O. No.: 18, 15 March 1945. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy at Achain, France, on 13 November 1944. At 2 p.m., Company G attacked the village of Achain from the east. S/Sgt. Spurrier armed with a BAR passed around the village and advanced alone. Attacking from the west, he immediately killed 3 Germans. From this time until dark, S/Sgt. Spurrier, using at different times his BAR and Ml rifle, American and German rocket launchers, a German automatic pistol, and handgrenades, continued his solitary attack against the enemy regardless of all types of small-arms and automatic-weapons fire. As a result of his heroic actions he killed an officer and 24 enlisted men and captured 2 officers and 2 enlisted men. His valor has shed fresh honor on the U.S. Armed Forces.Related story: BG James A Williamson: Son of Adair, Medal of Honor receipient 2011-02-06 19:52:24 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History

BG James A Williamson: Son of Adair, Medal of Honor recipient Introduction from "Jim," who has heard of this Adair County, KY, hero and says he is the real thing. He checked Mike Watson's writing."If Mike Watson says it's so, it's by-golly full Gospel truth so far as I'm concerned. I checked his History, Vol I, and low and behold, what did I find but a brief biographical sketch of one James Alexander Williamson, born Adair County, Ky., 1829, etc. The only discrepancy of any note I found between Mike's account and the sent was that according to Mike, the family left Adair County in 1832 and went to Indiana, "and later' moved on to Iowa. I think one can with some measure of safely assume the family removed from Indiana to Iowa c. 1844 when Gen.-to-be Williamson was 15 or thereabouts. (Iowa was a bit of a safe haven for those wishing to "escape" the war clouds that were rumbling as early as the 1840s. A number of Adair/Russell County families, including some of the Blairs and Perrymans, removed there in the 1850s.) -JIM By Hal W. Roach I don't know about any of you, but I never heard about Brigadier General James A. Williamson when I was in school in Adair County.(This is from his Wikipedia page.):"Williamson was born in Columbia, Kentucky[1] in 1829. When he was fifteen years old his family moved to Iowa where he worked as a farmer, before studying law and being admitted to the bar. In the years prior to the Civil War he served as the chairman of the Iowa State Democratic Committee. He calls for maintaining friendships with all, a new openness with the public from the Board and Management, including full public disclosure of finances, including all salaries at the hospital. He wants an end to the trash talk and gossip By Ralph R. Waggener Editor and Publisher, It's Just for a Smile News I have been taking rehab at Westlake Regional Hospital for the past few weeks for a stent I had put in back in November. During rehab time I have had a lot of talks with the nurses there. The nurses are some of the best if have had. They all care a lot about our hospital and just as the the ones who left do, they worry about their job security. That's understandable. It is not a reasoned analysis of the history of elementary education in the Commonwealth; not a study of fairness and achievement in the drafty schools of yore. Great Wooded South's National Skunk Month Sight and smell of skunks is obvious during February mating season By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester Kentucky Division of Forestry For those who have not received the notice February is National Skunk Month in the Great Wooded South. Increased skunk activity is now becoming obvious by both smell and sight on our highways. Skunks are nocturnal but have very poor eyesight and are more active at twilight, dawn, and on moonlit nights. Animals such as skunks with this kind of eyesight are considered to be, crepuscular. Crepuscular animals are very likely to end up as "road kill" but this likelihood is greatly increased because of their Mardi Grasian, dancing in the street activity, during the skunk mating month of February. -Billy Joe Fudge 2011-02-06 03:28:30 | Comments | Printable version
