Wishes he had known Bliss, KY could have been bought for $600 Comments re photo 37742 Bliss Bypass widenedBob Koch writes: This is an interesting photo for me, as my grandfather Mont Murrell was born in Bliss in September of 1883. When i first saw the Google map of Bliss it looked like some places described as a "wide place in the road". Now it looks as though it is *wider*. I wish I had known it could have been had for $600.00. What an opportunity lost. Thank you for the information in the magazine. - Bob Koch, Brier, WANote: Even those who live here marvel at the purchase, which was even less than the legendary Cherokee Allinson paid for Dirigo, KY and Cherokee got his town at a steal. The real less is that if Kim Bassinger had been as astute in buy towns as these to real estate baron, she have done better in the game. Some of us know how to buy towns. -CM 2011-02-05 16:08:40 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History

George Kolbenschlag sends photo of male Downy Woodpecker Knowing the Woodpeckers. Here's are tips on distinguishing male and female Downy Woodpeckers, and some of the differences between Downeys and Hairys, in preparation for the Great Backyard Bird Count, February 18, 19, 20, and 21, 2011. More Birding tips are available Saturday, February 5, 2011, 10am-12pm noon CT, at the Adair Extension Office, 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY. It's free. By George Kolbenschlag I'm sending another bird photo. I'm not sure you can easily use a vertical. But this is not extreme vertical; and I can't help that God built birds vertical. This is the boyfriend of the female Downy Woodpecker photographed by Peggy Spoon. He looks a lot like a Hairy Woodpecker, but is smaller and has a shorter bill. His bill is about half the depth of his head while the Hairy's bill is almost as long as it's head is deep. Unlike the Downy, the Hairy Woodpecker usually has no white bar on it's outer tail feathers. The Downey is quite common in Southeastern Kentucky. The Hairy is also common, but not as common as the Downy-at least in my back yard. -George Kolbenschlag, Columbia, KY 2011-02-05 05:56:13 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Birds of Kentucky
James Ray is wanting a horn, preferably a sax 'Maybe one or more of our readers out there might have a spare horn that they are not using' -BILLY JOE FUDGE Billy Joe Fudge has talked with popular Columbia personality James Ray Hammonds about one of James Ray's current dreams. He'd really like a musical instrument, a horn of some kind. "It looks like his real instrument is to have a saxophone," BJF said. "From what I can tell, he would take a woodwind, a straightun, he calls it, but would prefer the sax, or crookitun. Billy Joe Fudge is hoping someone will give a good sax to James Ray. Quite possibly, James Ray would have talent in this field as well as in art. Classmates remember so well his ability to draw, especially pictures of construction equipment. If anyone has a instrument they would like to pass on to James Ray, please respond to Billy Joe Fudge, c/o CM, using the Contact Form with this article. -EW 2011-02-05 05:36:57 | Comments | Printable version
