Small bird likely Northern Mockingbird if not Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher

Comments re photo 39088 Birds of Kentucky Help on ID of small birdWendy Butler Burt writes:
It's hard to tell from this one photo,But, here goes . . . How "small' is "small"? It most likely is a Northern Mockingbird if it is about 10", beak to tail. If it is 4.5" long, beak to tail, it could be a Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher that forgot to migrate south for the Winter - poor thing. Both species have gray backs, white breasts, blackish bills, and white outer tail feathers. Wendy Butler Burt
To learn more about identifying birds, everyone is invited to the next Birding 101, to be held at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY, from 10am-12pm noon CT, Saturday, February 5, 2011. Wendy Butler Burt and Barbara Armitage will be conducting the classes.

Wonders where photograph painters got training

Rachel Lyons writes to Jon Halsey, via CM:
What a great memory of your dad. Did he sign his work when he painted a portrait?

The portraits I have seen are as you described, lifelike with no indications of brush strokes and I had wondered if they were a different photo technique.

I wonder where a person went for such training?

Thanks for your response. I found it very interesting. -Rachel Lyons

(Ad) Two toddler bed Freecycled in hours; new ad is posted

Comments re article 42225: Ad Freecycling 2 toddler bedsAmanda Firkins writes:
Thanks for posting this for me/ I've already had several calls and have gotten rid of the beds now. -Amanda Firkins
No sooner than that Freecycling Ad changed to "No longer Available" than a second bedding freecyling post was made for another reader.

Check and use the listings in Freecycling now. It's a lonely ad right now, the only one listed. Freecyling is a great way to give away useful items one no longer needs. The biggest benefit, of course is the good feeling for the donor, and for the recipient, a free, needed, and in most cases, quality item. For many, too much stuff is a real burden. An added advantage of Freecycling is that the unwanted stuff could be hauled away at no expense to the donor.

Adair County FPS team from ACES/JAIS makes State Finals

Team of Lauren Talley, Easton Turner, Wes Stone, and Lauren McQuaide will be one of only 15 in Junior Division Future Problem Solving statewide

Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

As results from KAAC evaluating were announced at the end of the week of January 24-29, the Adair County school district was named one of only 15 Kentucky State Finalists in Junior Division Future Problem Solving statewide. The team was represented by 6th graders Lauren Talley, Easton Turner, and Wes Stone from Adair County Elementary School and 5th grader Lauren McQuaide from John Adair Intermediate School. These students competed against over 60 teams from across the state to earn qualification for State Finals competition.

The team practiced during the Fall semester and competed in early December. Their topic for the event was Air Transport in which they had to prepare to complete a 6-step process that involved identifying a number of possible challenges and problems related to an incident projected in a scenario set over 25 years into the future. A set of solutions and a plan of action then had to be devised based on the scenario, and all in under two hour's time.

The team will now advance to State Finals on March 12-14, 2011, in Lexington, KY, where they hope to be joined by fellow Adair County Future Problem Solver teammates at the middle school and high school level. This is only the second year that Adair County has entered a Junior Division team. Two years ago, Adair County Elementary advanced to State Finals in its first ever attempt. This year is a return to the event after not assembling a team last year.
