Life in the Holler: Giant mantis? or just holes in dead tree?

2011-01-25 - Old Clearsprings RD., Ozark, KY - Photo By Shamarie Claiborne.
Something stange this way goes in The Holler: And Shamarie Claiborne always finds it. She writes, "Waited for ever trying to see what lived in these holes ... So far, can't wait them out. I am going to try again later this week." She has been warned, of course, that it is not CM's responsibiltiy if she's et by that thing. It's quite obviously an alien, pretty wicked mantis, mimicking fallen timber, with a swollen left foreleg with its mouth in its elbow. Anybody can see that. -CM

Poem: The feeders are hung on shepherd hooks

The feeders are hung on shepherd hooks
by Maury Lewis, member, Adair County Garden Club and charter counter in the Adair County GBBC
The feeders have been hung on the shepherd hooks
The Garden Club suet balls hung, according to the book
We have our field guide in our hand
Our binocular so we can see across the land
We must go to classes, Birding 101
To learn how to count, it all sounds like fun
The reason for the count is really scientific
What birds are where, we must be specific
We must let them know how many birds are here We could use your help in the Count this year.
If you'd like to learn more about feeding and identifying the birds attend one of the ACGC's Birding 101 classes.
