Jim: The Cupola Goose Great Backyard Bird Count coming up February 18, 19, 20, and 21, 2011, is enough to make a fellow homesick and makes him nostalgic with the thoughts of the weather Goose which once adorned predecessor Courthouse By "Jim" All this talk about the Great Backyard Bird Count is enough to make a fellow homesick. Up here north of the Green River, the only birds are those cute little flightless tuxedoed guys. But I digress. Mention of the clocktower ornament brought to mind a snippet found in the February 7, 1922 News. (The court house mentioned herein refers to the predecessor to the one which now graces the square.) In a column titled "Do You Remember?," the author asked if the reader recalled: "The goose that perched upon the cupola of the old court-house and would let people know whether the wind was blowing North, East, South, or West."The article didn't mention if the goose were set in place before or after Mr. Trabue's bargain bell was placed within the cupola in 1843. Anyway, come February 18th, perhaps the Backyard Counters can take a moment to look toward the Square in honor of the long-gone goose. (And if any of you see a penguin, think of me.)
