Remembering Edith Steeval: A dear friend

She helped former County Extension Agent organize her first homemakers club. She was wonderfully talented in arts and crafts, and could have been "National Mother of the Year
'I have lost a dear friend.' - Sue Stivers

Sue Stivers writes:
Edith Streeval was a wonderful person. In my book, she could have had the title of "National Mother of the Year." She dearly loved her family and was so proud of her children's accomplishments. When I was County Extension Agent, she helped me so very much. In fact, the first new homemakers club that I organized was at her home. Edith remained a faithful club member throughout the years. I also admired her for her creative talents in the field of arts and crafts. She could make anything and always had the desire to keep learning. Edith also enjoyed teaching craft classes at the Extension Office. I'll always remember her as an outstanding lady and as my dear friend. I have lost a dear friend. -Sue Stivers

Garden Club Suet Ball Factory in full production

By Barbara Armitage

The Great Gourmet Suet Ball Factory was in full production on Tuesday. Nine members, Maury LewisKathy Hunt, Angie Loy,Monica Thomas, Melody Boward, Wendy Burt, Vonnie Kolbenschlag, Stephanie Archie - and me - of the Adair County Garden Club and the ever faithful suet guard dog Jake cranked out another batch of the Adair County Garden Club's Gourmet Suet Balls.

"Our Gourmet Suet Balls have been in such high demand we had to schedule a special production day to meet customer needs" reported Barbara Armitage of the ACGC. So what makes the ACGC's suet balls so special - well that's a closely guarded secret and they aren't telling.

The birds just love these suet balls - they know the secret recipe too but they aren't telling either.

Attract more varieties of birds to your feeders by adding an ACGC Gourmet Suet Balls to your feeding station. One pound Gourmet Suet Balls are available at the Adair County Library, Birding 101 classes or from any Adair County garden Club member for $3.00 each. Call Barbara Armitage at (270) 250-2979 for more information.

100% of the proceeds benefits the Adair County Garden Club supporting birding and garden projects in our community.

National Weather Service issues Special Weather Statement

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement, at 3:12amCT, Wednesday, January 19, 2011, for a region which includes Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell, and Taylor Counties of Kentucky in the CM primary service area for Thursday and Thursday night:
...Accumulating snowfall is expected thursday and thursday night... An upper level disturbance will move through the region thursday bringing wintry weather to Central Kentucky. A mix of light rain and snow will be possible south of the Western Kentucky and Bluegrass Parkways during the day Thursday. The best chance for a transition to all rain will be across far South Central kentucky. Cold air pushing into the area will change the precipitation over to all snow by late Thursday afternoon. Snow should taper off quickly Thursday night. Total snowfall accumulations look to be one to three inches with this system.Follow all the weather news with links from this site to National Weather Service and local Mesonet stations, updated every 15 minutes. And, for folk weather predictors and those utilizing native American methods, observe the activities of the birds today. Feeding frenzies may mean the the snow predicted is for real. Washington State reader related to three in Jim article on LWC

Wonders if Lindsey ever consider grandfathering in members of LW Training school with Bachelors Degrees as graduates

Bob Koch writes:
I was interested to see three of my relatives mentioned in your article about Lindsey Wilson of 100 years ago. My grandmother was the Gertrude Gabbert mentioned, and grandfather Montie (I never saw him called that, only Mont) Murrell. Gertrude's brother, Mont (Montie) Gabbert eventually earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Chicago and was the head of the Philosophy Department at the University of Pittsburgh.

I've wondered recently if LW Training School graduates of 100 years ago could have petitioned to be grandfathered (literally) into a Bachelors Degree as graduates.....I expect it's never been considered as there are so few members of the class of 1910 to make the request.

I enjoy reading the online magazine from Washington State; thank you for providing it! -Bob Koch
