Payne he saw little chance, as the Jaycees are now in only the second year of their 20 year lease. "We've made a lot of improvements, including the new pavilion." Jim: Judge Jeffries lays down the law

Noise ordinance enforcement: A crackdown in 1922 long overdue for diligent enforcement today. -CM

By Jim

The following front page announcement in the June 13, 1922 edition of the News without a doubt struck fear and trembling into the heart of every automotive scofflaw in the county. (I send this with a heavy heart, woefully aware that there are but three or four of us left who know what a "cut-out" was. "And thus, the days of yore tumble one on the other into the abyss of time.")
Judge Jeffries has tacked up cards, with the wording, warning automobile drivers that they must cut off the "cut out," and after dark, both lights on the machine must be in action, and fast driving on the streets and square must stop. The judge is right and we are glad he has given publicity to his decision, and hope that his warning notice will have proper effect. If this order is disobeyed, look out for fines.
Does, perchance, one of these warning cards reside in the Joe Moore Museum of Arcane and Ancient Relics of Adair County?

Jim gives tip on checking out charities

Comments on CM article: Questions come in about telephone solicitations

"Jim"
That is one smokin' hot article!

There are three sites I highly recommend for anyone considering making a donation to a charitable organization other than a purely local one:
  1. Kentucky Attorney General: Tips on Giving. This site is well worth the read. Of particular importance (to me, anyway) are the sections headed "questions to ask when solicited by phone" and "Donors have rights." The link to this site is

  2. Current Non-Profit Entities Filing IRS Tax Form 990 with the KY Attorney General (PDF), a listing of charities registered in Kentucky.

  3. Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator, a comprehensive listing of charities including just about everything you could want to know about each one.
As far as door-to-door solicitors, well, few are as curmudgeonly as I when it comes to that particular scourge.

Questions come in about telephone solicitations

Opinion: Some precautions on solicitations for charitable causes

We've received a number of comments in recent months, one just yesterday, asking whether some of the "local" telephone solicitations for charitable causes are legitimate.

Don't know, yet, but it's a question which needs the attention of local authorities, especially in those cases where the solicitation is done the name of public agencies, which, in our opinion, should never be done, at least not on government property, at least not on government time.. No one going to a public office should be solicited for anything. Not for a charity. Not to buy Avon. Not to buy a raffle ticket. Not to buy a ticket to a function, no matter how wonderful the cause.

My own bad experience with outside, commissioned solicitors happened last year. The solicitor came to the door and asked for a donation for an organization we enthusiastically support. We gave $20. Then the solicitor said, "We'll need your phone number to call you for your photographs."

I told the solicitor we didn't want any photographs, didn't want any calls, just wanted to give $20 to the local organization. He said that would be done.

Poetry by Rhonda Reliford: Coming soon

Coming Soon
by Rhonda Reliford
I'm preparing for a battle
and it won't be very long.and the Saints 10,000 strong.
They're coming down from Heaven
and it won't be very long.

You'll see the clouds split open
and behold that glorious sight.

The Savior he is coming
and he will win the fight.
So tell your friends and family
Yes tell your neighbors too.

They better get ready,
cause the Savior's coming soon.
Spread the word, the best you've heard.
The Savior's coming soon.

Birds of Kentucky: Feathered weather forecasters beat newscasts

At Tucker's Station, the household usually depends on Wayne - but before the last snow storm, the birds' feeding frenzy on January 6, 2011 offered better forecast. Wayne flipped through Tv weather channels, which predicted no snow. Barbara observed the birds. Even with the grand Tucker's Station Bird Buffet, with 16 feeders and several ACGC suet balls, fights were breaking out amongst the guests. And a new Tucker's Station world record - 12 Goldfinches on one Nyjer sock - told our heroine something was coming down. January 7, a snow day to be remembered. Birds not only entertain us. They have something important to say as well.
A getting ready for the Great Backyard Bird Count, February 18-21, 2011, story

By Barbara Armitage

For me the difference between being old and getting old is learning something new every day. This past couple of weeks I learned something new by going "old school".

Up here on the hill at Tucker's Station we generally defer to Wayne when it comes to weather forecasts. He never misses a news broadcast and in fact the only time I have ever seen him work up the nerve to tell me to hush is when the weather forecast is on.

At the first sign of bad weather moving into the area it's not unusual to find him flipping between several local and national television channels while listening to his favorite radio station's weather report and let's not forget the fact that he's streaming weather information on at least one of several computers in the house. If there's a cloud in the sky Wayne's got radar on it.

So on the morning of January 6th when I noticed an unusual number of birds at our feeders I began to wonder. Even with 16 feeders plus several of the ACGC Gourmet Suet Balls in the yard we couldn't handle the increase of birds. Fights were breaking out and several times I counted as many as 12 Goldfinches on one Nyjer sock - a new record for us.

On an average day birds feed in the early morning and then again in the afternoon. On that particular Thursday the feeding started as soon as the sun came up and continued nonstop until dark. Why?

The official "Wayne weather" report at 10:30 Thursday night was for no snow. So what were the birds trying to tell me?

A web search of weather folk lore was my answer. Birds are sensitive to changes in air pressure and a decrease in air pressure precedes a low pressure area.

Decreasing air pressure indicates the approach of a low pressure area, which often brings clouds and precipitation. Increasing air pressure often means that a high pressure area is approaching, bringing a fine and clear day.

In a text book storm the snow falls heaviest where the low pressure area (a cold front) collides with a high pressure area (a warm front) which is what happened late that Thursday night and most of the day on Friday.

When we woke up on Friday morning we had 4 inches of snow that the weather forecast said we wouldn't get.

Score: Birds 1 - Weather Channel zip.

What did I learn? When it appears that every bird in the county is at your feeders a change in the weather may be headed our way. If the birds plant themselves at your "all you can eat buffet" and refuse to leave then you can bet that we're in for nasty weather.

Which brings us back to Thursday's eating frenzy.

The birds seem to instinctively know that that despite what the weather forecasters were telling us we were in for several inches of snow. It's more difficult for the birds to find seeds when they are covered with snow.

We all need to spend more time in Nature's Classroom.

If you'd like to learn more about feeding and identifying the birds attend one of the ACGC's Birding 101 classes. Three classes are being offered this year for your convenience. Birding 101 classes will be held at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street (MAP), Columbia, KY:
  • Saturday January 29, 2011, at 10amCT
  • Saturday February 5, 2011, 10amCT
  • Friday February 11, 2011, at 6:30pmCT
For more information on Birding 101 classes - the Great Backyard Bird Count and how you can participate contact Barbara Armitage (270) 250-2979. Columbia, KY - Lindsey Wilson College student Elizabeth Goode didn't want to pass up an opportunity to serve others - even if it meant missing an opportunity to sleep in.

LWC's spring semester does not begin until Wednesday and the college's offices were closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. But for Goode and several of her colleagues, the federal holiday meant getting up early to enjoy a day of service.

Old House by George Rice photo: A Cumberland House

Structures are considered historically significant by Historic Preservation Office

Gregory Eastham writes:
Ed,

I would like to comment on the "Old House by George Rice." I recognize the style and architecture. The house is called a Cumberland House or more commonly a "tenant house." They are characterized by A-frame construction with a chimney located in the center, as shown, which is shared by two rooms (for two tenants). It appears the photo shows the rear of the house. I suspect the front has two doors (not always) for entry into each room which is separated by a wall. It represents a period of time when agriculture was booming in this part of the country and land owners could affort to hire folks to help tend the crops and take care of the animals. I see lots of these houses around and they are considered historically significant by the Historic Preservation Office and avoided by improvements with public funds.-Gregory Eastham
