Walking by the woods on a snowy morning

Photo-essay. Click on headline for introduction plus album

By Sharon Whitehurst

On sunless 'snow days' the morning is scarcely different in light quality from high noon or sunset.

The western boundary of our farm on Old Gradyville Road runs along a stand of mixed hardwoods and cedars.

Victoria Pike endorses crackdown

It's been needed for a long time, she says

Victoria Pike writes:
I agree 100% with Sammy Baker and Harrison Moss on the citations for not covering trash being hauled to the transfer station. It has been needed for a long time. Some people just throw it on a truck and away they go down the highway with trash blowing everywhere until they arrive at the transfer station. Hope this will remedy the problem. It is better than it used to be. Most haulers who do this for a living have covered vehicles now. So thanks to those haulers. - VictoriaComment re: Adair Co. Chronicle of our lives: Paradise views

Two photo album: Click on headline for both photos

George Moore Rice - to distinguish from the other George Rice his cousin, George T. Rice, who goes by "Tom," enjoys special perquisites with citizenship in the great Absher aka Egypt Community, a priceless scene he calls his "Paradise View."

Actually, he "owns" this particular view which, fortunately is maintained by two of Adair County's outstanding stewards of the land, Chris Watts and Steve Burton. It's a situation so many Adair Countians are in today - not all so lucky as Mr. Rice. The treasure does not go unappreciated. Mr. Rice has taken photos to show the magic of the changing scenes, with the accompanying Summer and Winter pictures. Two more, Fall and Spring, and he'll have a set.

Jim deigns not to take bait; but shares sublime rhyme

Thinker is very busy man today, working on Very Important Project
Comments re article 41714: Culture & Enlightenment Origin of term Rime

Jim writes:
Ed, although I generally rise to bait such as this like a grumpy old bass in the early spring, I haven't the time today, as I am working on a Very Important Project for CM from high on my snow-encrusted mountain, a few miles north of the Green River. While this Project certainly won't approach the magnitude and scope of Dr. Neat's "Approaches to Varmintology" or Pete Walker's "Postulates Upon the Dynamics of the Doodlebug" it is, according to my own scientifically unexacting standards, a Great Work; indeed, it may well be my crowning glory -- my Magnet Opie (or Magna Carta, or whatever it's called).

OK, one short comment, a poem (with, of course, abject apologies to Mr. Robert Stone and all the other real poets of the world), entitled "A Thought Concerning Mr. Fudge's Photograph."
"Thoughts on learning ancient Norwegian, Old English, and Tarheel and Viking Influences on the Way the English language is properly mumbled within the Sacred Triangle of Sano, Ono, and Esto and divers lands juxtaposed thereto
by the poet, Jim

Sublime!

Culture & Enlightenment: Origin of term Rime

Robert Stone sends a note on Rime Ice, noting that it is from the Middle English rim, with the ME derivation from Old English hrm and Old Norse hrm. It's first know use was before the 12th century.

We're grateful to Mr. Stone for bringing up this little known fact; grateful to Celia Stuart for the importation of the information from North Carolina, and grateful to Billy Joe Fudge for showing the beauty of Rime Ice in his essay with photo, Kentucky Color: Ice Trees

A sidenote on history: I haven't conferred with the venerable "Jim," but quite possibly the issue once raised by Dr. W.K. Neat, Doctor of Varmintology, and his Watson, Pete Walker, as to which is the better read man, "The Man Who Reads the Adair County News and the Grit or the Man Who Reads the New York Times and Scientific American?" now needs a few more dogs in the fight even though that question was never fully resolved when first posed by those Great Thinkers. Maybe the Big Three of Today's Media World: CM, Salon, and Wired," should be added to the mix, a suggestion which begs for, nay demands the wisdom of "Jim," should he deign to dispense wisdom from his mountain -EW
